"People are all doing a thing, and I think there are mistakes they could make with it" to me is a challenge to think about how to better scaffold those people rather than a reason to have contempt for people.

Read the parts about what I’m calling “faith” again. That’s the point.

I think the metaphor breaks down somewhat for me there. That is — sending someone who doesn’t want to interact with LLMs an email that you use Claude to write doesn’t seem as asshole-ish as putting meat into a dish you serve a vegan. But I can’t clearly articulate why I feel that way!
030
jacobian @jacobian.org · 17/06/2026
That wasn’t really my goal. But also, I think it’s a lot less straightforward than meat, at least for me; I don’t feel like I know enough to do what you’re asking.

Absolutely agree. Vegetables was already a big part of my diet when I started eating less meat, but if they hadn’t been another upside could have been discovering more and better veggie recipes.

jacobian @jacobian.org · 17/06/2026
And, like, there are people for whom eating vegan/vegetarian *isn’t* a sacrifice, they’re healthy without meat protein and don’t derive any special pleasure from meat foods. So for them it’s hard to understand why everyone wouldn’t “just” abstain - “it’s so easy!”

OK, not that anyone asked, but let me just explain why my takes re: Tesla stans are what they are and why they're so pointed. I ended up in conversation with someone who is a pretty big deal in Tesla circles. Had influence with Elon etc. He didn't know the words "Alpitronic Hypercharger" 🧵

I don’t use Nix/NixOS so I’m not sure I totally understand — but it sounds like you’re doing the “have LLM generate config, apply config” workflow (rather than “SSH and do the work directly) — is that right?
100
jacobian @jacobian.org · 04/01/2026
People who are having success managing (low-stakes, non-production) servers with LLMs — how are you going about it? Are you just pointing Claude (or whatever) at an SSH connection, or are you having the LLM write config management code and then applying that? Or something else?

Hell yeah, love it. “Only take feedback from people with some skin in the game” (sponsors, in your case), is totally the kind of middle-ground option I was thinking about. I’m glad it’s working for you!

jacobian @jacobian.org · 21/10/2025
The “default” working model for open source projects is working in public: you don’t need permission to contribute, you can just show up. When this doesn’t work, people often retreat into working in private. This is a mistake! There is a middle ground: jacobian.org/2025/oct/18/...

Working in Between Public and Private - Jacob Kaplan-Moss
If working in public isn’t working, consider adopting a middle-ground option instead of retreating into fully-private.

A lot of tech people, particularly more junior folks, are looking for jobs right now. A short but important note for them: newcomers should generally ignore career advice from people who've been in the field longer than 10 or 15 years. jacobian.org/2025/mar/13/...

Beware tech career advice from old heads - Jacob Kaplan-Moss
If you’re new to tech – say, less than 5 years in the field – you should take career advice from people who’ve been in the industry more than 10-15 years with enormous skepticism.

Funny, in infosec we do “event” vs “incident”. “Incident” triggers regulatory/contractual obligations, so we call things an “event” until we’re sure it’s a real incident and not a false alarm.
