It's the Orlando way! If they were half as good at defending as they were doing intricate trick passes they'd have won every game the last three seasons.

Oh great idea! I've just been sitting on a 5-gallon bucket in a mop closet all this time

this also reminds me of the game design talk/live cooking demo I had designed and pitched to a game's expo that accepted it and I had to back out last minute and have never felt so bad about anything ever in my life

Setting aside their world-class defense and all timer goal, Cabo Verde's ability to calmly play out of the press is astounding

and it feels bad to watch because no one is watching sports for the objective rulings. we watch it to feel things! which is why i'm crying at like 10pm two nights ago when Iran gets their goal taken away. it /feels/ unfair, it goes against the spirit of the game.

ok last thing! @friends-table.bsky.social's videogame podcast Side Story did an all-time podcast episode on the importance of ambiguity in sports/games and the rise of automated pitching in baseball. you should go listen to it! sidestory.show/26-the-juice...

anyway, we would need a monumental shift in global culture and values to make sports more subjective. and i don't think that's happening anytime soon. and who knows if it would be better.

Jack perse @jackperse.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
even if a stat can explain those shifts, they fail in comparison to the electricity you feel in a stadium. the collective breath holding and eruption of emotions (positive or negative). whether or not a guy's toe it ahead of another guy's toe ruins that.

Jack perse @jackperse.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
my measuring stick for this is, do we get The Hand of God under the current rules? If not, the rules miss what I find so beautiful about sports. it's the intangible energy and shifts during play.

Which is why we are in the middle of this current shift to turn every rule in sports into an objective, measurable, binary measure.

(what i'm about to say is nothing particularly new but...) when nba players started getting covid it became blindingly obvious that major sport leagues are just microcosms for hegemonic culture. (thread?)

The scope of games is not predestined. And the "well games are cheaper than they've ever been" cannot be taken seriously if the rising cost of staying alive is ignored.

A screenshot of a slide. The top bullet is circled and reads "Free yourself of the game ever being good, successful, important, popular, or proftiable"

been thinking a lot about my talk at PIGCON last weekend, which was (not so) subtly begging people to make weirder games *the first point is not well written i'm sorry i made this slide like half an hour before my presentation
A basic white slide with black text. The title reads "Jack's Three Truths About the World". Three bullet points after that...
- Not everyone who makes games can make money
- Putting art in the world is valuable
- Making games that distort/stretch/bend/break the medium is necessary for a vibrant art field

Yeah, I've had some issues with the top-down perspective where I feel like I'm getting punished every time I try to go over the top of any of the large bosses.

Jack perse @jackperse.bsky.social · 04/06/2026
Yeah, at least there are a ton of accessibility options and difficulty modifiers. I've definitely been beating my head against it a few times and will probably start easing the difficulty soon. I also think the boss/non-boss content in Mina is more to my liking

Movies are good. Ending that live rent free in my head.
The ending scene of Midnight Cowboy, featuring Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight A still from the end of Tár. A wide shot of a symphony playing music. A still from the end of the film Another Round. Mads Mikkelsen smiles with his eyes closed while dancing on the coast.

Brown some minced/diced onions and garlic, throw in a buncha frozen peas, cover until peas are hot. Put a big spoonful of calabrian chili oil in there. A great cheap tasty veggie for lunches for the week.

My bad advice: years ago I described my creative process to my therapist as a large dark oily blob that grows and grows in the corner of my mind until it becomes so big that it needs to be excised. so uh....do that.

Jack perse @jackperse.bsky.social · 19/04/2026
(find the gear) you need to know how to get yourself into the writing place. (move with pleasure) If the creative process doesn't feel good, you need better practices/tools. This doesn't mean it's FUN but it should be a mode of being that feels right.

ALSO god like the whole point of carbon steels is that they make sense in a restaurant. They keep their edge for a long time and they're easy to sharpen. thats helpful when you are using a knife for 40 hours a week and sharpen it at least once a week. it makes ZERO SENSE to own one in the home imo
