Would like to see a journalist ask the 7 of Ireland's 14 MEPs (3 FG, 3 FF, 1 II) who just voted to: -endorse burqa bans -call "hatred of Israel" a sign of "Islamist influence" -identify European Muslim communities as potential tools of "malign foreign actors" to justify themselves
Believes that the practice of concealing the face in public spaces and premises open to the public poses an unacceptable challenge to public security, identification and effective law enforcement; supports, therefore, all national measures aimed at prohibiting full-face coverings (niqab or burqa) in public spaces and premises open to the public as a necessary step to ensure social cohesion, public safety and the protection of the rights and freedoms of others, in particular womenwhereas separatist narratives, systematic victimhood, antisemitism, anti-Christian hatred, hatred of Israel, conspiracy narratives, challenges to secularism, the use of religion as a tool of social control or the contestation of equality between women and men may constitute markers of ideological radicalisation or Islamist influence;whereas the ongoing investigations into suspected electoral fraud in Borlänge and Järva, Sweden, illustrate the particular vulnerability of diaspora communities to organised attempts at electoral influence; whereas such vulnerabilities may be exploited by malign foreign actors or transnational ideological networks pursuing covert agendas

The details of this case and of Hanning's post-public service life generally paint a picture of a guy who's pretty amoral and corrupt, willing to break the law to make some cash, but not one who would aid an enemy. "Consulting" doesn't scream "Russian spy"
Prosecutors believe that Hanning intended to resell the documents as part of a paid consulting role he had built up after leaving the BND, prosecutors added. To what extent and to whom he disseminated them remains part of an ongoing investigation.

In an amusing anecdote, Mr Lundestad relates how he found Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, who won the award in 1994, watching an episode of the Tom and Jerry cartoon in his hotel with other Palestine Liberation Organisation members. The thesis of this article is just orientalism. Nothing more. "We cannot reach a diplomatic agreement with these people because they come from a culture which is inherently irrational and violent; they understand only force" - indistinguishable from the language of 19th century colonialism
In Middle Eastern societies, seeking revenge is an acceptable way for men to cope with grief and wounded pride from the violent loss of loved ones. Since 1979 this approach has also been an important part of Iran’s foreign policy.

Knowing that you were abetting war crimes and continuing to do so is actually worse than earnestly believing no wrong was done, both legally and morally
When Mr. Biden got on the phone with Mr. Netanyahu and declared that he was no Santa ("his words, flecked with spit," Mr. McGurk writes in the book), the Israeli asked what he meant. Mr. Biden said he could cut Israel's military aid with the snap of a finger.

Mr. Netanyahu started to explain that the strike on the aid workers was a tragic miscommunication.

Mr. Biden interrupted. "I don't want to hear it, Bibi," he said.

There is discussion to be had about the rise in apocalyptic predictions but you will not have it if you begin by lumping together phenomena that have measurably killed thousands/millions of people with a mixture of total fantasies, political propaganda, and decidedly non-apocalyptic concerns
Climate alarm, Covid and artificial intelligence. In recent years, these have loomed as the most conspicuous peaks along the apocalyptic ridgeline of our culture. But the mountain range is punctuated by a number of other forms of existential dread: the fertility crisis, the mental health crisis, the smartphone theory of intellectual and social decline, border chaos and the "woke mind virus," the fall of American democracy. Cast your eyes down into the foothills and you might see some more marginal conspiracy theories: 5G, the "great replacement."

Conspiracy theory gets the facts wrong but the feelings right, as the activist- writer Naomi Klein likes to say. And the feeling that all these visions share is the drop-in-your-stomach sensation of contemplating a sudden and

overwhelming loss of control.

("these people are beyond saving but also maybe we need to try a little more racism to be sure" is almost exactly what Friedrich Merz said in the Bundestag last week by the way)
“The term ‘remigration’ is nothing but a synonym for ethnic cleansing based on origin and skin colour,” he said on Wednesday to applause from the other parties in the Bundestag lower house.

In a fiery speech addressed to the AfD parliamentary group, which repeatedly interrupted him with loud taunts and heckling, Merz said millions of working immigrants were crucial to German society.

“If those working in Germany have to leave the country again because you are championing ‘remigration’,” Merz said, “then the skilled trades in Germany will no longer be able to function: not a single care home will remain open, not a single hospital in Germany will remain operational, and not a single restaurant in Germany will be able to stay in business.”

He said the AfD’s rhetoric, which propelled it to the strongest showing for a far-right party in a German state since the Nazi period, “is precisely what is dividing our society so deeply”.He has adopted a hard line on border policy in a faltering effort to win back AfD supporters, and acknowledged Germany still had “problems in the area of migration”.

“We still have many people in Germany who should not have permanent residency. This is consensus in the [ruling] coalition, that we need to deport more people,” he said on Wednesday.

Just 13% of AfD voters in Saxony-Anhalt cited "peace in Europe" (i.e. ceasing arms deliveries to Ukraine) as the party's biggest draw Instead almost all said crime, immigration, and economics Which makes sense! People rarely vote on foreign policy. Especially not in regional elections

In Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD received 52% of the vote among people aged 35-44: that is, people who were either not born yet or younger than 7 when East Germany ceased to exist The idea that the AfD's success is attributable to people's memories of hanging out with Soviet soldiers is just...not true

He said the AfD’s rhetoric, which propelled it to the strongest showing for a far-right party in a German state since the Nazi period, “is precisely what is dividing our society so deeply”.

Support for Merz, a conservative Christian Democrat, has plummeted in the 16 months since he took office at the helm of a coalition with the centre-left Social Democrats, amid disappointment over slow progress on economic growth and the cost of living.

He has adopted a hard line on border policy in a faltering bid to win back AfD supporters, and acknowledged Germany still had “problems in the area of migration”.

“We still have many people in Germany who should not have permanent residency. This is consensus in the [ruling] coalition, that we need to deport more people,” he said on Wednesday.

“But we make a careful distinction between those who work in Germany, who contribute to our prosperity, and who are welcome here, and those who do not have permanent residency in Germany and who must leave our country. Unlike you [the AfD], we take great care to make this distinction.”

Article in the Guardian:

Women are giving their partners the ‘Illiterate Boyfriend’ test: ‘Do your best to pronounce these words’

People online are distressed at men butchering words such as ‘hyperbole’ and ‘hors d’oeuvres’ – highlighting a gender reversal in ‘intelligence gaps’Turns out that’s a potential dealbreaker, at least according to a (rather judgy) cohort on TikTok. See: the “Illiterate Boyfriend” trend, which is testing some couples on the app. Users have compiled a list of what are essentially SAT words for women to ask their male partners to read. Many of these men – this is an overwhelmingly heterosexual activity – fail to finish the list unscathed. They trip over entries such as “hyperbole”, “cynicism”, “diaphragmatic” and the oft-butchered French term, “hors d’oeuvres”.

“I want you to do your best to pronounce these words,” one woman asks her boyfriend in a clip viewed more than 8.8m times. He gamely nails his first attempt, reading off the herb “thyme”. But he’s less successful with “epitome”, “challah” and “fuchsia”. (“Foo-chia?” he guesses). “Conscientious” and “faux pas” also prove tricky. He ends up with a score of five out of 17, or 29% – very much a failing grade.

The couple laughed through the exercise, but viewers were not as charmed by an adult man struggling through what they considered basic vocabulary. “The fact that his vote matters just as much as mine is really pissing me off,” one woman wrote in the comments section. “I’m gonna be honest girl, this is worth breaking up with him over,” read another comment.

Two of the words the man correctly identified were “colonel” and “regime”, which, to one user, was evidence of a red flag: “he’s obviously a Republican”. (Maybe he just has an interest in military history, a time-honored hobby of boyfriends everywhere.) Regardless of political affiliation, it seemed fair game to dunk on Mr Foo-chia. One final quip from a viewer: “He’d be so upset if he could read these comments.”

Also just extremely funny to volunteer the evidence that when his editors corrected the article to change his unattributed copy-paste to quotations, the text was substantively the same Like yeah! Thank you for identifying what plagiarism is!
For instance, in this one article, Barkan’s original wording was:

"For nine consecutive days, the temperature didn’t climb above freezing. Though this did not technically break a record — in 2018, New York temperatures remained at or below freezing for 14 consecutive days — the lows were in the single digits with horrifying windchill. Large portions of the city waterways iced over completely."

And the editors at New York corrected it to:

"The New York Times’ Dodai Stewart notes that the temperature didn’t climb above freezing for nine consecutive days. Though “the cold snap has not broken a record,” Stewart writes, given that New York City temperatures in 2018 “remained at or below freezing for 14 days,” recent lows were in the single digits with horrifying windchill. Large portions of the city waterways iced over completely."

I am sorry…please compare these two passages. In the first passage, Ross Barkan linked to the Times article and summarized its facts. In the second, the editors of New York did the same thing, but used direct quotations from the Times article. There is no ethical difference between the two. These changes are purely a matter a style.
000
Jack Kennedy @jackkennedy.ie · 26/08/2026
Kanakia's core argument seems to be basically the same as Barkan's own, something along the lines of "ah, what is plagiarism really? We all need to do background. The lines are blurry! And if they were crossed it was just a mistake. Incompetence not malice"
Ross was an opinions columnist—He commented upon current events. He learned about these current events from other news sources. In order to write your take on the news, you need to summarize the news (just like I did at the beginning of this post). There are certain editorial standards, which vary from publication to publication, regarding how you summarize other peoples’ articles. And while Ross might’ve violated these standards, it was an error made in innocence, and it does not necessarily constitute plagiarism. That’s what the Columbia Journalism Review said back in May, when this story first broke:

"The question is whether this is plagiarism or something more like sloppy attribution or aggregation. Barkan seems genuinely confused about the distinction. In the Shapiro piece, he did link to Harwell’s story in the following paragraph—presumably not something he would do if he were trying to be deceptive about his source material."

There is a difference between passing someone’s material off as your own (plagiarism) and failing to follow these editorial norms for attribution. New York claims that Ross made some mistakes, and he has issued an apology. There is no evidence that the mistakes were intentional or that any dishonesty was intended.

But even that may not be the most victim-blaming part of the article Wilson takes it as axiomatic that if someone takes their own life, all the causes were internal. Something was just...wrong with them. No one else's actions can have contributed, and it's dangerous to ever suggest they did
Of course, Arday was not lynched; he reportedly died by suicide. Suicide is caused by mental illness, not by criticism. And we must not ban criticism in the name of protecting the mentally ill; suicidal thoughts are so widespread across a vast range of views that a “suicidal” exemption to free speech would have to encompass any critiques of anyone.

Background edit

He is the son of John Caddick-Adams and Joy Mary Caddick-Adams (née Martin), and grandson of Major Charles Caddick-Adams, JP, all of Brampton Lodge, Newcastle-under-Lyme, in the county of Staffordshire. [1] The house was in possession of the family for 110 years before being sold in 2008. His grandfather and great-uncle, Captain Thomas Geoffrey Caddick-Adams, were both awarded the Military Cross during World War 1 serving with the North Staffordshire Regiment. [2] His maternal grandfather was Clifford Arthur Martin, fourth Bishop of Liverpool and Chaplain to King George VI. His cousin is Vice Admiral Paul Bennett.

Military Career edit

He was born in Chelsea, and educated between 1974-78 at Shrewsbury School in Shropshire. He then attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, where studied under Professor Richard Holmes, later his director and mentor at Cranfield University. He was commissioned into The Staffordshire Regiment, a regular regiment of the British Army, in 1979. This was a regiment in which several family members had served. He joined The Queen’s Own Mercian Yeomanry (amalgamated in 1992 into The Royal Mercian and Lancastrian Yeomanry), a cavalry unit of the British Territorial Army, in 1985, [3] was promoted Captain in 1994 [4] and Major in 2000. He was awarded the Territorial Decoration in 1998. [5] A fellow officer was the MP, Sir Desmond Swayne.

In 1996-7, Caddick-Adams was mobilised as an army reservist and served as the official NATO and SHAPE Historian in Bosnia with the IFOR and SFOR peace keeping missions, based in Sarajevo. He was attached to the staff of the US Commander, General William W. Crouch. He wrote about some of his experiences in 1998. [6] One of his entertaining letters home, written from Sarajevo in 1996, appeared in Behind the Lines (2005) by Andrew Carroll. [7]

In 2003, Caddick-Adams served in Operation TELIC, during the Iraq War, as the official UK Historian, based at CENTCOM in Qatar and later in Basra, wh…

First she says it's about contrition, that he's reformed now. But also notes she doesn’t really believe in rehabilitation Then she allows that being reformed and accepted in society is one thing, but public office has higher standards Then says it's still fine because councils don't really matter
“This man is showing that he’s more than contrite, he’s actually working training Prevent officers, speaking in universities and schools,” Badenoch told BBC’s Radio 4 Today programme.

“I am extremely worried about antisemitism and what I feel is that if we can’t have the people who have previously been radicalised, who understand what went wrong and are part of the fight against antisemitism now, if we’re saying: ‘No, no, no, you’re untouchable,’ then how can we pretend that we believe in rehabilitation?

“I’m someone who’s quite sceptical about rehabilitation and I see this man as somebody who has been rehabilitated.”“There is a big difference between going back into society and teaching others possibly about what you did and why it was wrong, to making the leap to standing for public office,” she told the BBC. “I think there’s a massive distinction there.”

Badenoch suggested the convicted criminal would not be allowed to stand as an MP, but that his ambition to be a councillor was legitimate. “I’m not giving him a national platform, he is standing to be a councillor in Somerset … it is a local platform looking at parking, sorting out bins.

“I have much higher thresholds for what it takes to be a Conservative MP.”

This is not about the German historical responsibility towards its victims; it’s about the German alleged responsibility towards itself: criminalizing the denial of Israel’s, or any other ethno-nationalist state’s right to exist, is protecting the German narrative that nothing is wrong with the nation-state or with nationalist ideologies as such, but it was specifically the Germans who went rogue.
