This kind of intel is the best part of appearing on podcasts. I happen to go to Texas fairly often so I will keep an eye out. Thanks for the tip 🫡

This thread is remarkably similar to my experience, feelings, and the precautions I have taken. Worth reading for some good insight for what even reasonably privileged trans folks are going through.

I'm currently reading @kkdumez.bsky.social's 'Jesus and John Wayne' so this paragraph from the latest issue of @garbageday.email hit especially hard:
Screenshot of an email newsletter. Text reads "It wasn't just the question of "what is America" that loomed over the whole weekend for me, though. I also wondered whether this was all even worth it. Not just White's $60 million investment, but, also, Trump's continued endorsement of hypermasculine gutter culture. Can you feed a political movement with jalapeño vodka slams, Monster Energy Drinks, and potato chip skewers? The modern Republican Party has always been a coalition of vampiric aristocrats and a roving tailgate of redneck dopes, but at least the party of Reagan and Bush was smart enough to LARP as some mythic cowboy archetype. Do the JD Vance's and Marco Rubio's of the world think there is a path forward after Trump if they can capture the "guy who wears an Affliction T-shirt in the pool" vote?"

you know the kid lit publishing controversy that actually exists and I'd like you all to get on? The lack of marketing & publicity support for books by marginalized authors that don't sell and then are used as proof to not acquire more books from those authors.

Anyways, the "modernizing" of kids books, to me, for the most part, is a damn shame. If you haven't heard about this yet, here's one more recent article on it: archive.ph/jBWk6 And if you have any idea who wrote the article I was referencing earlier, please tell me! I failed to bookmark it.

If we think kids can't relate to or be engaged by a setting so different from their own, we are robbing them of the ability to develop empathy and imagine worlds beyond their own. (And perhaps also forgetting fantasy is a thing? That many kids love?? So how is something set in the 90s too foreign?)
111
Jackson Bird @jackisnotabird.cool · 28/05/2026
Critical thinking, research skills, and media literacy are all atrophying in our society. We are doing a disservice to kids by not trusting they can look up unfamiliar terms. I mean jeeze, looking things up is so much easier now than in the 90s, even with search dying.

Jackson Bird @jackisnotabird.cool · 28/05/2026
Having already seen how younger generations are losing that thread to the past by watching less older media, it makes me deeply sad when publishers scrape dated references from books and replace them with more current ones.
100
Jackson Bird @jackisnotabird.cool · 28/05/2026
And it wasn't just TV & music. I also read books from the 80s, 60s, 30s. I still remember some of the turns of phrases or unfamiliar technology in Beverly Cleary novels that I'd have to ask my mom or teacher about. But that didn't deter me, *it made it more interesting* and taught me about the past.

Jackson Bird @jackisnotabird.cool · 28/05/2026
I feel ancient around my gen Z friends sometimes when I reference something from the 70s that goes totally over their heads. Like, I'm not THAT old, but I passively absorbed a lot about previous eras by watching and listening to older media as a kid––and many of them seemingly did not.
110
Jackson Bird @jackisnotabird.cool · 28/05/2026
Of course that's great in a bunch of ways (I am a content creator who would like people to watch what I make, after all), but this journalist pointed out that younger generations are losing out on that connection to the past.

Jackson Bird @jackisnotabird.cool · 28/05/2026
But with millions of hours of content posted online everyday, kids are no longer stuck watching whatever the TV networks choose to air to fill time. With the ability to stream any song at any time, they don't have to listen to their parents' music collection. Almost everything they consume is new.

I was born in 1990, but I grew up watching reruns of I Love Lucy, Diff'rent Strokes, The Brady Bunch, Three Stooges, The Munsters, etc. and tons of movies from the 80s and before. I learned what technology and culture was like in those eras.

Jackson Bird @jackisnotabird.cool · 28/05/2026
I wish I could find this article again to cite because it made some great points, including that early cable TV channels needed to fill air time and thus birthed the rerun.

Jackson Bird @jackisnotabird.cool · 28/05/2026
I read something recently about Gen Z understanding fewer cultural references from before their lifetime than previous generations, and attributing it to the glut of media now compared to the slimmer options of cable TV and home video.

It's wild to me that Colbert consistently brought this level of depth and complexity to his interviews on a late night comedy show. It's the kind of media I wish we had more of in the mainstream and, as of last night, we have even less. An enormous and shameful loss.

Kansas Judge Eviscerates Anti-Trans
The judge found 349 individual facts supported the continued provision of gender-affirming care.

This gave me such a needed jolt of hope. Not just for trans people, but for basic critical thinking skills and having a friggin' spine.
Screenshot of text, which reads, "This weekend, a Kansas judge issued a scathing 117-page rebuke of the state's ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth—and in doing so, methodically dismantled the case against that care. In his ruling, Judge Carl Folsom III worked through the testimony of the state's witnesses one by one, finding that its anti-transgender “experts”—routinely paraded by groups like the Alliance Defending Freedom, SEGM, and Genspect—offered opinions built on "cherry-picked information, conjecture, and research taken out of context," and granting their testimony little to no weight. He then laid out 349 individual findings of fact, drawn from scientific evidence and the testimony of credible medical experts, documenting the safety and efficacy of gender-affirming care. He ultimately found that the ban likely violates the Kansas Constitution—which guarantees broader protections than its federal counterpart. That distinction matters enormously: because the ruling rests on state constitutional grounds, it is largely insulated from the U.S. Supreme Court and its decision in Skrmetti, which closed the federal courthouse door to these challenges but left the state one wide open."

Now, I will cop that I have lots of notifications that get silently delivered to my notification center. So I see them. I just check them on my terms, when I think about it. I control my attention to them. They don't control me.

I fully understand needing to receive calls/texts if you're a caregiver, for certain jobs, etc. But push notifications for individual emails, DMs, group chats, news headlines, and every single app on your phone. That sounds like absolute hell. How does anyone ever get anything done?

Like, I just didn't realize it was a trendy thing or such a big step. I thought most people had some version on these days, with all the schedules/filters available now. But yes, I have annoyed people who try to call me or to whom I reacted aghast when I saw they have push notifications for *email.*

That said, I did relate to this: "...similar to how I imagine it felt to declare yourself a vegan in the 1990s. You come across a little bit rude, or at least holier than thou... People sometimes take it as an attack on their habits, when it's actually a personal decision you’ve made."

Genuinely didn't think having Do Not Disturb on 24/7 was a radical decision. I have filters for family, and other important folks on occasion, to get through, but have otherwise had some version of DnD on for close to a decade.
