I had to present this to the Redditors at r/TheNinthHouse (fans of Tamsyn Muir's Locked Tomb series).

Doctorow's essay presses the point that LLMs are an attempt by the powerful to dispense with human expertise. This may help explain the affinity that the US right wing has for "AI": It allows them the appearance of expertise without the bother of listening to experts or actually learning anything.

In a way, this is a shame. A shame he died at home, instead of in jail.

One neat touch (I just finished the series) is that whenever a Utopian dies, every coat momentarily turns to static as a community-wide act of mourning.

Thank you for the correction! I have no defense for the error, although at my age early dementia cannot be ruled out.

My guess is money. She and Lewandowski figured they could keep the taps flowing better if she stayed married, at least while she was in office.

Maybe my Google-fu is weak, but it looks as if the Iowa-Maryland game was three days before the Hawks-Warriors. Schmitt’s still an ass.

Go back to 1989 for _The Clothes Have No Emperor_ , Paul Slansky's chronicle of the Reagan years. Ol' Ronnie had plenty of tropes and anecdotes that he'd roll out over and over. But none were this stupid.

Traveling from Georgia to Chicago recently got me vexed with Apple and Google Maps both. Yes, I wanted to avoid interstate highways, but not at the cost of one or two hours getting through Chicago metro.

Since this is the worst of all possible administrations, I assume the quoted passage from the NPS document is the prompt they will use to have an LLM generate the pages.

Yes! As a child in south Georgia in the 60s and 70s I only saw them when traveling to Florida. These days I live 150 miles further north, and they're everywhere.

As an aside from the very amusing thread, nine-banded armadillos have become very common in the southeastern US over the last fifty years. Like, as common as opossums and raccoons.

Every one of the kids in that audience was not just polite, they were positive and encouraging. Their message to the performers was 100% "we are here to see you succeed and help if we can." Probably the best audience I've ever seen.

jackisgettingold.bsky.social @jackisgettingold.bsky.social · 13/09/2026

Back around 2010 I saw a talent show done by kids at my daughter's middle school (ages ~12-14) during a weekend field trip. The audience was just the kids and a handful of chaperones. Knowing the well-earned reputation middle schoolers have for being awful to one another, I was braced for the worst.

Every time I see an article about a self-driving vehicle accident, I wonder the same thing: How does the rate of accidents per mile driven compare to human drivers? Self-driving vehicles are going to make different mistakes than people, but that does not automatically mean they make more of them.

My daughter bought these for me. I am not accustomed to seeing cephalopods on my chip bags. I would characterize the flavor as 'undefined savory' as it's not noticeable as seafood.

C'mon, what's the over/under on how many days after her WH departure we'll find out she's taking a job (extremely lucrative and quite cushy) in the wingnutosphere. And will it be in punditry, a Republican party org, or a Trump/Trump-adjacent grift?

I expect some Bang and Olufsen in there. Likely this:

Beogram 4000 turntable. the disc is shiny metal with black radial lines. The tonearm tracks along a horizontal bar in the rear. Controls are flush with the surface at lower right. There is a dark smoked plastic dust cover.

I cracks me up when people are like "You couldn't make THIS movie or show today because people are so politically correct and sensitive!" Sir. There was an entire board in Hollywood dedicated to sniffing out any onscreen hint of married people having sex. Lucy couldn't say "pregnant." Sit down.
