A take that I have that I didn't realize was hot is that I think nationalizing random companies that we don't like is a bad idea actually.

Companies that offer high bandwidth, low latency, mobile, lightweight satellite internet? Which other companies?

I think everyone has different priorities for judging AI. What is yours, and which of those areas have they not improved on for the last 3 years?

It is almost the exact same size: three inches taller, less than half an inch longer, like 2 inches wider, and with a smaller wheelbase. It is also less than 10% heavier. They are very similar in size, and the Mach-E is not big compared to most SUVs.

I'd argue that the Rivian is actually a fairly small SUV, compared to the Mach-E (almost the exact same size) or Explorer (Rivian is considerably smaller). It isn't really small on the scale of all cars, but it is much smaller than some of the really big SUVs and trucks out there.

I know that some internet vegans are silly but I've never met a vegan irl that doesn't vax or avoid meds because of animal testing. Also holy inferiority complex Batman.

My favorite part about DST and time zone discourse is that you can never tell who is doing a bit and who is serious.

Concrete guy here: nah, cement companies don't deal with construction contracts or companies at all, they don't need to since they have to sell to whichever concrete company gets any particular contract. They sell to us and we bid for jobs to pour concrete.

I don't doubt that, but white southerners, who make up a lot of the military as well, are also well-known for beard affinity.

I will admit that this is pretty funny.

I know people instinctively recoil at monocausal explanations and want important trends to have sufficiently weighty causes, but “We built a novel social environment that rewards anger and lurid pessimism and moved 95% of political discourse into it” is a pretty good explanation for a lot of stuff

The doomer ethos is, if anything, defined by a lack of concern about the details of any particular problem. There's a reason I paired "beef and gas prices" with "climate change." The end goal here is manufacturing a rationale for cynicism, anger, and despair, not picking an issue and fixing it.

I mean I don't know what else to say except that it is obviously something that can be fixed, and likely will be fixed. If you think that Starship is some cursed object immune to earthly engineering then we probably are never going to agree.

I mean yeah they definitely have to work on engine reliability, which they have been doing since the first starship iterations. It is still the largest and potentially most capable vehicle to enter orbit.

Yeah I mean it is LEO, that was the point. This was a "massive failure" by literally no reasonable standard. NASA does not, and never has, built rockets. They assemble them from largely complete contractor-built components.

Yeah unfortunately the biggest spacecraft ever launched has achieved and delivered payload to orbit.

I mean the US and USSR (and friends) were shooting down each other's planes from basically the first moment WW2 ended. U2's, RB-47s, RB-29s, C-130s, Mig-15s and A-20s. Just lots of shoot downs happening, mostly in the 60s.

Pye Wacket @jackindabox22.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
They weren't trying for a booster recovery today, nor a ship recovery. This was just an orbit test, which succeeded. Starship is now the largest thing we've ever put into orbit.

You definitely can lose weight by routinely eating less like come on man. Dietary puritanism doesn't work as public policy, but it can work for individuals. I lost, and have kept off for half a decade now, more than 20 pounds.

To be fair the US doesn't get away entirely scot-free from that point either. We lost Princeton to a single 500lbs bomb. Yeah that was a light carrier but the bomb was also smaller and the class was also designed later and DC was waaaaaay better in 44 than in 42.

pArrive isn't a "real" p value afaik but it gets the point across.

Pye Wacket @jackindabox22.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Not a stupid question and yes that is what that means. P-values are used a lot in weaponeering. pHit (probability of hit) pKill, pFuse (whether the fuse will work), pGuide. For basically every possible thing that can happen to a weapon there is a probability that goes along with it.

I don't buy into the startup MIC marketing, but I also don't mind them pushing for cheaper/less capable systems that can, if nothing else, let us save the good stuff for the really hard targets. Furthermore I don't mind them threatening legacy's sales and making them further prove their worth.

Pye Wacket @jackindabox22.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
You *are* though. You are getting more airframes and more weapons and more sensors. That is more offensive and defensive strength. Even if the individual drones are not as survivable, they are still there. If Fury is cheaper/faster to produce than -42 then it has at least some reason to exist.

Ok apparently I'm wrong about the Pylon limit, at least according to the images in the article
000
Pye Wacket @jackindabox22.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Limit. That kinda bugfucks it for carrying anything really spicy in the A2G space.

Pye Wacket @jackindabox22.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Well CCA, even the early increments, could still be used for other things. 4th gen aircraft on strike missions could still use extra bodies up there either as escort or just extra pylons (once that cape gets added). Honestly the thing that bugs me about Fury just as much is the claimed 800lbs pylon

Pye Wacket @jackindabox22.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
I suspect that if you aren't directly plugged into it, you could very easily not be in the loop, especially on pretty bleeding edge stuff like this. Plus if you were in the loop I suspect that you wouldn't be talking on Bluesky about it.
100
Pye Wacket @jackindabox22.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Actually it seems just untrue since we have much more experience with non-LO aircraft than the reverse. Even if you really do count the Fury as "completely non-LO", which seems rather arbitrary since I don't think LO has a whitespace hard definition.
100
Pye Wacket @jackindabox22.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
You don't think anyone did any analysis on the Fury before committing to buying it? Or considered how it would fit into the force? None at all? You are more familiar with the space than I am but that seems unlikely.

Pye Wacket @jackindabox22.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Not every system has to be maximally stealthy. Having a thing which flies and carries ordnance is valuable even if it has the RCS of like an F-16. Plus the FQ-42 seems like it has much better characteristics in that sense so it's not like we're locked in with only an un-stealthy CCA.

That's Pi I believe. Also sorry if it isn't comfy to think about, but telling people to not vote for the Democrats is campaigning for the Republicans.

No I think he sees it as hostile because it is campaigning for the Republicans, who want to kill us all and especially the people campaigning for them.

The Houthis have previously shot Saudi F-15s down in the past several year, and the US lost one this year to a SAM.

Pye Wacket @jackindabox22.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
The de-facto nation of Yemen has access to a small suite of fairly good SAM systems, mostly IR guided ones that are difficult to detect even after launch. This is not the first time they have downed Saudi F15s either.

Pye Wacket @jackindabox22.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
"Yemen shoots down Saudi jet" or "Yemen fires ballistic missiles at Israel" or "Yemen captures an island right off its coast" are both more accurate and less shocking than thinking of them merely as plucky little rebel guys that hate Jews and the west and women.

Pye Wacket @jackindabox22.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
This is as good a place to mention that when someone mentions "The Houthis", it is tempting to just think of a bunch of guys in tents driving used Toyotas. However, you should really think of them as the government the entire 40 million person nation of Yemen since that is what they de-facto are.

ones (that still produce very high quality prints) can be had for $250 or less. I like community maker spaces (and similar), but I think that it is counter-productive to construct the ability of people to have their own little shops.

Pye Wacket @jackindabox22.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
I mean I'm not at all against community run things like that. In fact, they already exist and are (often) called maker spaces. They will have a lot of different creation tools, with 3d printers often being the centerpieces. Honestly though, even very nice pre-built printers are <$1000, and smaller
