And that admitted transphobes are so enamored with JKR's transphobia, they've adopted her franchise a signal to each other, and a signal of hate to any trans person who sees it, tells you so much.
Any time you wear Harry Potter clothing, or loudly proclaim your love for it in public, or go to the theme parks or watch the new tv show or buy the books... it signals you are a danger to trans people. It's perhaps the only thing transphobes and trans people agree on!!

You should read The Girl Beneath the Ice because it is wonderfully painful in a way that makes you keep coming back for more. A great way to get introspective about yourself and the ways we can hurt ourselves when we try to grow.

“I love you.” The slight quiver in her voice when she says those words means she’s telling the truth.
Just be miserable, like she wants. She’s your mother and she loves you.
“Okay.”
“August. I love you so much. You’re my baby boy and I love you.”
He nods.
“Do you love me?”
He. Nods.
“I love you.”
A tiny little boy nods.
She waits for him to say something, and when he doesn’t she hardens again. “You ate dinner already.” It’s an accusation.
The child named August Hageman nods.
“With that family?”
The child named August Hageman nods, smaller this time.
“I cooked for you, because you didn’t tell me you weren’t going to be home.”
August Hageman finds a scuff mark on the linoleum below him he never noticed before.
“It’s in the fridge. If you still want it.”
I probably did something stupid and marked up the floor.
“Or I could just throw it in the garbage.”
Is there anything I touch that I don’t taint?
“What do you say to me, August?”
Help.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” she curses, then downs the rest of her glass.
As she drinks, the ground underneath August’s feet dips and wavers, and he nearly collapses. Reaching back, August grabs onto the edge of the countertop with his good hand, bracing himself in a way that he hopes isn’t too obviously defensive.
Neither of them say anything for several minutes.
He leans, she sits.
August Hagemann and his mother let time dissolve.
It is another moment in both of their lives where inaction is preferable to functioning.

Dear beautiful women,
I've started this letter like ten times and deleted it every time because every time I start I cry. So I'm just going to write it.
Your flag matters to me. It matters so much that it's flying at a lesbian household where anyone walking by can see it.
I'm a trans girl so I'm not sure you can relate but I'll try. Most days I'm doing math in my head like which hallway is safer, who I can sit near at lunch whether it's worth saying something or just letting it go. I'm so tired. I don't think people who don't have to do it know how tired it makes you.
I walk past your house almost daily. The first time I saw the flag I slowed down without meaning to. It was just hanging there like it was no big deal but to me it was everything. It felt like the people inside would see me as who I actually am and I wouldn't have to explain or prove anything. My shoulders dropped for the first time all day and I almost cried right there in front of your home.
I know that living here isn't easy for gay people like you where not everyone is kind about it so putting that flag up means risking stares, comments or worse. You didn't have to do it. It would have been so much easier to stay quiet. You did it anyway, and that is the bravest thing I've seen anyone do. Every day it stays up it tells people like me that someone is willing to be brave so we don't have to be alone.
Now I look for it. Some days it's the one thing that makes me feel like I'm not imagining that I deserve to be here. When so much of the world feels like it's deciding whether there's room for me your flag says there is. Please keep it up. You might not know it but it's helping me get through the day.
Thank you for your courage, and for leaving the porch light on for the rest of us.

Emoria has crafted a story in her debut novel unlike any other I have read. The author invites us to where it's dark, scary, and vulgar, only to find life-affirming truth and beauty that speaks to a trans experience anyone should empathize with. It is unabashedly queer and harnesses the anxieties and even the joys of the trans experience to tell a dizzying and sometimes seductive horror story. While it is a story that is most definitely directed to a trans audience it also cuts to the heart of the human need of realizing one's true self, potential, and community.
The book also makes full use of the word as a visual medium with all manners of inventive typography and formatting, further driving home moments that hit like a truck.
The author's inclusion of a content warning list by chapter (of which there are many potentially triggering things) and a link to a "Cis Guide To Aftertaste" are also nice pieces of companion material for those that need it.
It is a book that dares to be read. It is a book that feels dangerous and full of psychic damage, but somehow still fun and retains a gentleness that keeps you safe. To those with an open mind and heart (who also aren't squeamish), to those who ever felt lost in life or figuring themselves out, I can't recommend this book enough.
I also want to clarify that I read this book as a cisgender hetero male. I understand this book has been quite effective for those who are themselves trans or just discovering that part of them, which I believe is amazing and makes this book even necessary. While I can't say my experience even compares to those whose foundations were shaken, I'd like to highlight that you don't need to be queer to listen/support/enjoy or allow yourself to be affected by queer media as I found myself welling up with tears multiple times throughout the story. At a time when the media landscape is being threatened by homogenization, it is now more important to seek out and celebrate works like Aftertaste.
