Such a fun project & massive team effort. We sampled tree cores my 1st yr of grad school then took a year to figure out how to grind wood… ! But we were amazed to find such a complex & unexpected ecosystem inside trees. And we’ve just scratched the surface! We explored 150 trees— 3 trillion to go!

These ‘let’s attract the hot-shot researchers’ calls ring very hollow to me. Climate science is a team sport. It takes a whole set of skills. We need to be thinking about how to keep critical -teams- integrated. Nabbing hero-model scientist types is not going to retain institutional expertise.

It matters that scientists speak out against what is being done to US science. Staying silent is neither "objective" nor "staying out of politics". Silence now *is* political - it supports the status quo, says "nothing to worry about". We need to sound the alarm. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Congrats to Samuel Jurado on his first first-authored paper! We found that larger rain events lead to lower soil moisture, creating dry land-atm feedbacks in the NE US by increasing the height of cloud formation. Research @harvardforest.bsky.social thx to @ameriflux.bsky.social & NSF REU & LTER

The only photographic evidence of winter in our forested peatland is hoarfrost in the chipmunk holes @harvardforest.bsky.social And still no snow in the forecast 😔

Had an amazing #AGU24 with lab presentations from Samuel Jurado giving a talk on dry land-atmosphere feedbacks and Naomi Hegwood’s poster on tree methane flux @harvardforest.bsky.social Also loved celebrating @biometlab.bsky.social’s Ambassador Award and the Biomet Lab Family Reunion 🎉

So excited for my “little” brother @kevinhatala.bsky.social & research team on the big release of results that were years in the making, showing different hominid species shared the same landscapes:

A discovery in northern Kenya hints that two extinct species that were our ancient relatives shared the same habitat and possibly interacted.

Scientists may win on total citations count, but philosophers definitely beat us on the “creative applications” front
