This looks like a very interesting initiative (well, yes, we would say that) - teachers and local history organisations might like to check this out: www.localhistoryhub.org.uk

After we bought our weight in books at the Mark Twain Library annual book sale in Redding, Connecticut, we went to Redding and ate our weight in chocolate ice cream at Dr. Mike's in Bethel: Main Street (Rt 302). It doesn't get any better than this.

The only consolation is that it is time limited (we hope), although much damage is being done globally. I have long thought that imposingregime change on other countries is a disastrous error, the only people who can change their government are those living under it's yoke (Norman or otherwise).

For a while archives in the UK introduced bulky White gloves for readers, I knew the moment I tried them, that they could cause paper to tear. I used to put one glove on very ostentatiously and wait for the archivist to get absorbed in something, then turn the folios with the ungloved hand.

This is where I finally get to write 'hold my beer', in my 2nd year I signed up for a course at London University on Constitutional History taught by Conrad Russell and Prof S Bindoff. No one else signed up, they ran it anyway.

It's great, if it's warm as well in the evenings, which isn't always the case. It's getting a buit chilly now despite a day of brilliant sunshine and blue sky.

Because of British Summer Time, it is now light at 9pm here in the South of England and there will still be streaks of light until 10pm, children won't go to sleep, because it's so light!

I agree, I always ask for a higher fee if travelling, it would be better if societies were more upfront about what they expect to pay a speaker.

What do you think a reasonable fee would be? It's difficult to find any guidance.

Just back from a heartening second meeting of the National Maternity & Neonatal Taskforce. Glad that the new Secretary of State chaired it himself. Next month will be a big one for maternity safety with reports from both @dockendenltd.bsky.social and Baroness Amos. May their recommendations be wise!

If it's too long for their attention spans, they can just read Sharpe's article on the 1630s. But they'll have to know what the Whig interpretation of History is first, so that's another book to read first for context. Then they should read responses to Sharpe. Ah the seamless Web of History!
