The pair were elected to the 'ward of Basishaw' and campaigned for Smithfield from within the Corporation's arcaic political strucutre. As Brewster recalled '‘we found a flaw in the electoral system [and] infiltrated every committee conceivable […] they saw through me but it didn’t matter.’

But in the 1990s a surprise decision was made to renovate the market's in thier present location and bring them in line with EEC hygiene regualtions. The political maneavuring of meat traders Peter Martinelli and John Breswter appear to have been key to this deision ...

Smithfield looked set for the same fate in the 1980s. The Corporation ever aware that 'closing the markets and thereby releasing the area for development would produce a vast influx of funds to City's Cash'.

Smithfield's Poultry Market burnt down in 1958. The fire spread into the underground vaults and burnt for several days. The meat market continued to operate next door through the fire

Clement Atlee seriously considered not re-opening Smithfield after its partial closure during rationing, becasue of recurring industrial action. In the words of Ernest Bevin (Foriegn Secretary at the time) : 'AS LONG AS WE HAVE SMITHFIELD, WE SHALL HAVE TROUBLE'

The first attempt to move the market came 100 years ago. It was proposed that all the wholesale food markets would be housed in the site that was built for the British Empire Exhibition (1924) at Wembley
