I'm learning to be a little more of a squeaky wheel—to share my wants without feeling self-centered 🫣 Call it manifesting, asking, or simply making my hopes visible Maybe saying what we want out loud is how we find the connections that make it possible 🌈✒️ #AuthorSky #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

Both. Ea is haunted by bigotries of her people and puts on several masks throughout the story, but each of them is tinted by the one she’s terrified of ever removing. The mask is so ingrained she doesn’t even know she’s physically manifesting a mask over her entire form without thinking.

I want to do some more beta reading for a beta that went from “gimme like 2-3 weeks to get to it” to 1/3 of the way through mine in the first week. Like my dude. I thought I could pace myself and now I feel lazy. Other than that… book 2 prologue clean up then maybe try outlining a bit?

I'm J.A. Bri My current (and hopefully debut!) work is Moonlit Embers: a queer-normative, messy, and emotional fantasy abt people finding their way through horror, lust, and fun on their way to clean up a celestial mess. Currently in beta reader status, though I need more. #QueerPrompts

For the most part completely. There is a “sow and reap” theocratic villain society that has its comeuppance, and likely some assholes because there always are, but in the whole? Nobody cares. Characters and group at the center of the story are very “yeah and?” About it. Or queer themselves.

Using Imperium instead but... “Yet another… here to claim my power for your own? Begone, filth! I was once feared by the Urunayan Imperium. Those like you should crawl. But—*HE LIVES?!*” The statue moved, now only half encased in stone, twisting against the stave upon which she was impaled...

I feel ya there. I wrote my story and started deciding to actually try to publish because I was not seeing enough of this kinda story with these kinds of people. The kind of story that little me imagined other stories to be, only to be disappointed.

When you connect a Waymo ride with a bus route, Waymo will pay your bus fare. Which is useful for two reasons: it helps them curry favor with city governments that might otherwise be wary of self-driving rideshares, and it gives them data about where to provide more cars to replace buses later.

This month's @motherjones.com cover is astounding. Reposted with alt text:
Cover of the September-October issue of Mother Jones Magazine: a white background with the words "50 years of fearless journalism" in black print, centered above the name/logo of the magazine in large Bright Red. Below that in black, the words "the southern strategy — jim crow was dead and buried. Then came the Roberts court."

And then, framing those words, there are two sets of robes: to the left, the simple black robes of the Judicial Branch of the United States Government, as a Supreme Court Justice might wear; to the right, the white robes and hood of the KKK.

A white person's hand with cuff of business suit and shirt visible, reaches into the scene from the right, poised to grab the Klan robes.

Ea (MC) is pan, though she’s got a soft spot especially for the other MC Dwarves as a people are culturally poly and pan, though some do have narrower preferences, as can anybody, and more than one dwarf is in the story.

Moonlit Embers is primarily a 2 person POV novel with one close friend being ocassional, another being epilogue only and two villain-adjacent in prologue. The story is what determines who gets a POV, whose pers could best continue the story. Now I just gotta wait to see what betas say about it.

Protags are unquestionably into each other, no angsty, no "will they, won't they" drama as that wasn't really what I was going for, here.

It is adult epic fantasy with dual protagonists, 6 total POV (3 are only POV once), kinetic fantasy, etc etc I have samples up on ja-bri.com if you wanna take a look, also list content warnings (if you care about those) and lastly what I'm looking for out of beta readers.

Critique Guidance
The manuscript has been line-edited. Prose, grammar, punctuation and word choice have all been through several passes plus ProWritingAid. It has also just come through a full structural pass where continuity, timeline, POV, chapter pacing and internal lore consistency have all been checked and corrected.
That's not a boast, it's a redirect. What I need from you is the thing no pass can find: what it's like to read.
The three things I want most:
1. Where you slowed down, skimmed, or put it down. Not whether it was good-where your interest dipped. Even a marginal "meh" with a page number is worth more than a paragraph of praise.
2. If you weren't beta reading, would you have stopped?
Either "put it down for the night" or "put it down for good." Both are useful and they're very different.
3. Anything you thought was a mistake. If a line, a name, or a detail struck you as an error, tell me-even if you decided later it wasn't. Especially then.
What I don't need: line edits, grammar notes, "I would have done X instead," or reassurance. Be blunt. I'd rather hear it now than from a reviewer.
While you're reading: if you ever pause and think wait, what?, drop a comment right there. Don't go back and work it out - just mark it and keep going. But please don't go hunting for errors/things to mark up, and don't spend your precious time and attention on sentence structure.
FINALLY: I will be requesting beta readers use betabooks.co which I will invite you to if you choose to take part! I haven't turned on the full feature suite yet as I'm gathering volunteers, but will soon! :-)

I deplore the craven cowardice of those implicated in this report. That queer, BIPOC and Chinese diaspora authors were singled out for political examination, and denied a fair chance at SFF’s best-known awards, is reprehensible. Had my first book come out a year later, I’d have been disqualified too
