New paper/genus Alert! We described a partial "dorudontine" from Bournemouth, England, which has been known since the 1800s. We recognized several features on the cervical and dorsal vertebrae that differ from existing species of basilosauridae.

My Bachelor's thesis has been published! We examined the problematic taxonomy of Zygorhiza kochii and Dorudon serratus, with implications for the wider taxonomy of the basilosauridae. A small thread:

On the identity of historical specimen TM 8501 and the taxonomy of North American Basilosauridae (Mammalia, Cetartiodactyla, Archaeoceti)
Phylogeny and taxonomy of early whales have always been a complicated matter, partly due to confusing nineteenth-century descriptions and diagnoses and a profusion of given names. A largely complete c...

Two versions of Cynthiacetus peruvianus. One bearing more a more whale-like oral setup, one more like terrestrial mammals.

Found this really cool artwork of Dorudon atrox by deviantart user Bistahieversor. Really hits the sweetspot of having enough soft tissue, but not simply copying the anatomy of extant whales.

New book out - Vertebrate fossils of Louisiana - and inside is a nice treat: the first publicly available images of the LSU Basilosaurus cetoides, hidden away for nearly fifty year since it was discovered. Initially described in a Ph.D. thesis, but a publication never followed. #whaleontology
Figure showing the 3d model of the LSU Basilosaurus skull in lateral, ventral, and dorsal views; the skull is long, with large triangular cheek teeth, conical incisors, and a blowhole placed far out on the rostrum.Photographs of the skull and mandibles of the LSU Basilosaurus.
