A total of 385 bee species!! The incredible work carried out by @curromolina.bsky.social et al. demonstrates the great biodiversity of hymenoptera found at the Doñana protected area. My congratulations to the authors. Beautyful piece of work.

Among Andrinade, 'Andrena solenopalpa' has exceptionally long mouthparts. This picture of a male shows that the extendable portion measures more than half the length of the body. Pollen grains in the galea suggests that this adaptation promotes pollination. funding: @britishecologicalsociety.org

In this study led by Carlos Herrera @cmhmaliani.bsky.social, we describe three new species of Andrena. The intensive survey over 27 years at the Cazorla range demonstrates the importance of this genus in the pollination of the flowering plant species in this area. 👉 jhr.pensoft.net/article/1659...
Plot on the left depicts the frequency distributions of Andrena species visiting the flowers of individual plant species showing that, in most of plant species pollinated by Andrena, the number of Andrena species is low. The plot on the right shows the phylogenetic relationships of the 292 plant species surveyed in the Cazorla range and associated number of Andrena pollinators, this picture highlights that flowers of ca. 56% of flowering plant species in Cazorla are visited by Andrena species.

'Andrena solenopalpa' is unusual within its genus due to its long mouthparts. It exclusively visits 'Lithodora fruticosa' flowers, probably being a textbook example of adaptation. Does this adaptation mean higher pollination effectiveness? #botany #ecology #pollination @britishecologicalsociety.org
