Jamie Dunning @j-dunning.net · 10/09/2026Our first 50+ bird ringing day at Aust of the year, a shift from sub-Saharan migrants to autumnal chiffchaff and blackcap. Despite the south winds, good hirundine passage (+++) more meadow than tree pipit, 3 hobby and osprey (1/3 today) over. Most effort spent on a patch-tick wasp spider. 0301

The late May heatwave was exceptional: an event +4.3 sd above mean - likely to occur only once every few decades under normal conditions. It was also unusual in being early and coinciding with tit breeding season. What consequences did it have? 🧵1/n 11912
Jamie Dunning @j-dunning.net · 31/08/2026My first sea(estuary)watch of the autumn was quiet, bar a common scorer, with wind cutting off passage up the channel. Waders at new passage were more interesting- 2 Sanderling, 3+ Curlew sand and Spotted Redshank the best of it. Otherwise hobby and a small push of wheatear through. 0281

Jamie Dunning @j-dunning.net · 30/08/2026Difficult in fledglings, but they look quite reddish to me, suggesting linnet. Also, as far as we know twite breed in just one location in England now and they have never been common in the Dales. I’d be interested to see more photos. 120
Jamie Dunning @j-dunning.net · 25/08/2026Not really. I think the dry summer has helped with second broods, which has boosted the numbers. Still few adults and high juv mortality. 000

Jamie Dunning @j-dunning.net · 26/07/2026Their bill plates are fluorescent under high powered uv light, which is probably related to bioaccumulation of GFP. Sadly though, that means they don’t glow much in natural conditions, and not at night (which would be phosphorescence). They are best enjoyed in day-light Mike! 150
Jamie Dunning @j-dunning.net · 24/07/2026It’s a sadly deceased willow warbler. Yellow-browed are a quite scarce winter visitors. 100
Jamie Dunning @j-dunning.net · 23/07/2026Given puffins fledge at night to avoid predators, and given the extreme tides, we released this one down the channel at high tide in the hope it will be encouraged back towards Lundy. 1213
Jamie Dunning @j-dunning.net · 23/07/2026Of all the lawns what are the chances it would land on @severnsidebirds.bsky.social’s, who has seen 5/7 puffins recorded in Avon this century. The lights along the channel, at Hinkley point (and Paul’s garage), must be distracting for nocturnal fledging seabirds on Lundy and beyond. 1232
