Coaster Credit #206 and #207: Stardust Racers (Green) and Stardust Racers (Yellow). Wow. Just wow. Both rides are incredible airtime filled monsters with great launches. Love the inversion hills. The dueling elements of the ride are immaculate. No idea which side I like more. Amazing rides.

Coaster Credit #205: Mine Cart Madness. The theming of this ride is fantastic. Honestly it really does feel like a living video game. As for the ride experience itself, well, the concept is very unique and interesting, but it feels more like a prototype ride than a fully fleshed out experience.

Coaster Credit #204: Curse of the Werewolf. Pretty fun ride, not too intense but it does spin quite a bit. The theme is excellent. The capacity is not. Won't be one I ride very often.
Awesome theming at the entrance to the ride.

Coaster Credit #203: Hiccups Wing Gliders. This is a super cute themed ride with some great moments. Not very intense, but that's the idea. Like an even easier version of Hagrid's.

Coaster credit number 200: The Voyage at Holiday World. I knew it would be something special, but I didn't quite realize just how insane this ride is. The lift is unbelievably tall for a wooden coaster and while the first hills are fun, it's when you get low to the ground that it just goes nuts.

I want to talk about something that has brought me great joy: The new album by Worm, Necropalace. This album is so much that I love about listening to heavy music in one package: Spooky dungeon synth. Howling reverb drenched vocals. Tremolo riffing. Chilling doom. Insane guitar solos. IT'S FUN.
The album cover for Worms 2026 album, Necropalace. It depicts a vampire sitting on a stone throne, a portal open to his left, with a dragon approaching from the open void.

#1: In Mourning - The Immortal Melodic death metal I have always been an In Mourning fan, but I've never felt like their albums stood out among their contemporaries. Until now. This is a melodic death metal masterpiece that fuses nearly every aspect of the genre (and some outside it) flawlessly.
The album cover for In Mourning's 2025 release, The Immortal. It depicts a crane with a red head, a gold amulet around its neck, and in its talon a moon-like crescent. Behind it, a gold-lettered clockface, with gears surrounding it.

#2: Dormant Ordeal - Tooth and Nail Blackened death metal As I say, you don't always need to reinvent the wheel. Sometimes you just want a really good wheel. Relentless, brutal, and finely crafted. I have zero doubt in my mind this is the best blackened death metal album of the 2020s so far.
The album cover for Dormant Ordeal's 2025 release, Tooth and Nail. It depicts two figures, one masculine and one feminine. They face each other and are set as though in a dance. They both carry a spear, and have stabbed through the other figure's chest. Behind them, a yellow circle as though it's a rising or setting sun.

#3: Tomarum - Beyond Obsidian Euphoria Progressive black metal The biggest draw to me (other than the incredible music) is the triumphant narrative. It's uplifting in a way that feels personally affecting, as the protagonist's journey of self-discovery is incredibly relatable as a bisexual man.
The album cover for Tomarum's 2025 album, Beyond Obsidian Euphoria. It depicts a reddish valley, flanked by dark jagged mountains, a black castle in the far distance. The clouds in the distance contort to dark shapes, like hands.

#4: Decline of the I - Wilhelm Avant-garde black metal Longest standing album on my list, this came out in February. This band masterfully fuses a modern black metal sound with unique elements, such as IDM, or a rendition of the Bulgarian folk song "You Are Beautiful, My Forest". Highly underrated.
The album cover for Decline of the I's 2025 release, Wilhelm. It depicts a mostly greyscale portrait of a man surrounded by hands coming from off canvas. One hand grips the mans neck as if in a chokehold, the hand adorned with a gold ring on the ring finger.

#5: Scalpture - Landkrieg Old-school death metal My most listened-to album of 2025. A concept album detailing the horrors of the Thirty Years' War from the 1600s. This checks all the boxes: Tortured vocals, brutal Swedish death metal style riffs, and the best bass guitar tone I've heard all year.
The album cover for Scalpture's 2025 album, Landkrieg. It depicts an impressionist style landscape scene. In the background, hills and forests. In the foreground a lone tree stands by a road. A broken wagon lays in the grass just off the side of the road. Two men, one on the ground, one standing tall with an axe swinging down, are the sole figures in the art.

#6: Vauruva - Mar De Deriva Atmospheric black metal Let it be known that 2025 is the year I discovered that Brazil has some seriously good black metal projects. What Vauruva have displayed here is a flawless ear for atmosphere, incorporating folk instrumentation into a nature-y black metal sound.
The cover for Vauruva's 2025 release, Mar Da Deriva. It depicts a barren, snowy landscape with mountains in the distance. A figure holding a staff appears to have a constellation-like look, with bright stars in the night sky shining overhead.

#7: Primitive Man - Observance Funeral doom / death / sludge metal I'm not going to waste my words here. What Primitive Man has crafted is an album that sounds like the year 2025 in sonic form, and to me, is the apex of their sound so far.
The album cover for Primitive Man's 2025 release, Observance. It depicts a skeletal figure seated upon a broken crown. Arrows have pierced its head and shoulder. A long black snake coils around the majority of the skeleton's form.

#8: Imperial Triumphant - Goldstar Avant-garde death metal Is this the most accessible sound this band will find? Maybe, as their style is by nature very abrasive and bleak. What they've crafted here is a more "slimmed-down" album without sacrificing their signature sound. Arguably their best work.
The album cover for Imperial Triumphant's 2025 album, Goldstar. The album cover is stylized like a package of cigarettes. Two towers stand on either side of a (naked) golden metal woman. Behind the woman is a golden star. The top reads Nine Class "A" Tunes.

#9: Fallujah - Xenotaph Progressive technical death metal Easily their best material since 2014's The Flesh Prevails. Kyle has found his voice and has become an incredible vocalist. The riffs on this one are simultaneously technical and catchy, and the solos flow beautifully. A true spacy journey.
The album cover for Fallujah's 2025 release, Xenotaph. The artist behind this one is a a very capable artist, but they openly decided to use AI to "assist" in making this cover. Fuck AI. This clanker hallucination depicts an alien figure formed by a colorful nebula. I can't be bothered to detail it more. Thank fuck the music is so good.

#10: Abigail Williams - A Void Within Existence Atmospheric black metal Top 10! This one was a big surprise for me. I had never heard this band until now, but they bring a ton of diverse elements to black metal you don't typically find, like guitar solos and gang shouts. No Less Than Death is soty.
The album cover for Abigail William's 2025 release, A Void Within Existence. It depicts a man hanging from a gallows, with other men gathered around. The men are all ready with a paintbrush in hand, a blank canvas in front of them, as though the hanging man is their character study for an art exercise.

#11: Hedonist - Scapulimancy Old-school death metal Try not to headbang (Difficulty: IMPOSSIBLE). I know, I know, OSDM is tired, but this album absolutely fucking rules. These Canadians capture the sound of Bolt Thrower, Dismember, and Terrorizer and execute it with lethal precision. The RIFFS.
The album cover for Hedonist's 2025 album, Scapulimancy. It's a simple layout, with a container of bones in the center with the moon overhead. On the largest bone are carved red symbols. Two daggers made of spikes and bones flank the scene, aimed downwards, each covered in similar red symbols.

#12: An Abstract Illusion - The Sleeping City Progressive atmospheric death metal Wasn't sure with this one at first. Following up their last album, Woe, with a synth-laden, Vangelis inspired sound and a strong focus on vocals is bold - and the right decision. It's not Woe. It's The Sleeping City.
The album cover for An Abstract Illusion's 2025 album, The Sleeping City. In purples, blues, and blacks, the image depicts a city skyline in the distance. The center of the city is hollowed out like a geode, with a while light beckoning. A line of statues extends from the foreground to the base of the cityscape.

#13: Der Weg Einer Freiheit - Innern Black metal A testament to just how fucking good this year was for me and metal that this album isn't in the top 10. Black metal infused with this much emotion gets in deep. Many moments on here send chills down my spine. The final track has brought me tears.
The album cover for Der Weg Einer Freiheit's 2025 album, Innern. It depicts a single object in only two colors, red and black. The object appears to be a bowl, facing the viewer, lined with conical spikes.

#14: 1914 - Viribus Unitus Blackened death-doom metal This band hails from Ukraine. This album is a concept album, telling the story of a soldier trying to survive through World War I and how the horrors of war persist from the past to the present. Cinematic, relevant, and wholly captivating.
The album cover for 1914's 2025 album, Viribus Unitis. It depicts a soldier clad in armor, wielding a glowing sword and with angelic wings. The soldier is being touched by a figure that appears as the grim reaper. A scythe is gripped by the reaper's other skeletal hand. A storm is in the distance. A trail of bodies litter the foreground.
