Dogs evolved to eat your leftovers! Comparing dog & wolf genomes revealed dogs have up to 30 EXTRA copies of the amylase gene (AMY2B) that helps digest starch. This is a key genomic signature of living alongside humans & table scraps for thousands of years 🐕 www.nature.com/articles/nat... #2026MMM

Introducing New Zealand's latest Bug of the Year- the magnificent Ngāokeoke / Velvet Worm! NZ has two genera: one lays eggs (Ooperipatellus, 1st photo) and another gives live birth (Peripatoides, 2nd). They also deposit sperm which burrow through their partner's skin, but that's another story! 🧪

New HiSSE model just dropped! We show that gains and losses of single chromosomes sometimes (but not always!) increases speciation in sedges. Plant evolution is complex and messy, but advances in macroevolutionary models are slowly allowing us to catch up.
