The women in 1 Million Women's ShePowers program are powerful changemakers taking matters into their own hands – bringing communities together to share their vision of a better future for people and planet and explore the role renewable energy can play in this vision.
We know rural and regional women are disproportionately affected by the climate crisis. This can look like increased caring responsibilities, greater financial pressure when women may have fewer economic resources, and increased risks of gender-based violence following a disaster. But it’s also clear that rural and regional women can be some of the most powerful forces for change when it comes to how communities feel about energy transition.

1 Million Women also collaborate closely with Climate Collective Zenadth Kes and Currie Country Social Change to bring the lived experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to the program. #EnergyTransition #JustTransition #ClimateJustice #FeministClimateJustice #COP31
Through the leadership of Climate Collective Zenadth Kes and Currie Country Social Change, First Nations perspectives and lived experience are informing this work. Women in Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait), who are experiencing the impacts of climate change firsthand, are coming together through community gatherings and online or phone yarns to: share their experiences; build knowledge; shape advocacy for a fairer energy transition. 1 Million Women’s ShePowers program supports and connects this community led work, creating opportunities for First Nation women to strengthen their agency as climate leaders and contribute their voices in the conversation that matter about Australia’s energy transition.

IWDA @iwda.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
As more of us are experiencing the impacts of climate change first hand & grappling with soaring energy bills, the energy transition has become a hot topic in Australia. For rural and regional communities, this conversation comes with added layers. That’s why 1MW created their ShePowers program.
Rural and regional communities across Australia are uniquely affected by climate impacts. At the same time, they have also been targets of mis- and dis-information campaigns about the energy transition that are designed to create confusion and division while leaving communities fractured. As workers, volunteers and caretakers doing the invisible work of keeping communities together, rural and regional women are uniquely positioned to respond to this. That’s just one of the reasons why enabling them to more hold power as trusted and influential changemakers within their own communities, and beyond, is so important. Powering a movement for clean energy. 1 Million Women’s ShePowers program puts regional and rural Australian women at the heart of the nation’s energy (and economic) transition. 1 Million Women surveyed hundreds of women across regional and rural Australia who shared that their voices weren’t being heard, even though they hold unique perspectives on the opportunities and challenges of the energy transition for households and communities. A quote from 1 Million Women that reads, "Women are powerful changemakers and currently there is a gap, where our voices aren't being heard. We are the workers, volunteers and caretakers that can create a better future for our communities, one where the community is united, resilient and powered by clean energy.”The ShePowers Approach. By amplifying the voices of rural and regional women across the country, 1 Million Women’s ShePowers program creates space for meaningful conversations, collaboration and greater understanding of the energy transition within communities.

Around kitchen tables and in community halls, between friends and neighbours. This community-led approach is at the heart of their ShePowers program, designed to support regional and rural Australian women to become trusted climate leaders in their communities. The program also works in close collaboration with Climate Collective Zenadth Kes and Currie Country Social Change, First Nations women-led organisations bringing the lived experiences of climate change and energy transition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities into the national conversation.

The voices, leadership and lived experience of First Nations women, girls and gender diverse people are vital to #ClimateJustice. Their knowledge and wisdom hold the answers to building a future grounded in collective care, healing and justice. (3/4)
A quote from June Oscar AO, Chair of the Wiyi Yani U Thangani Institute, that reads, "The women and girls I met across Australia spoke about an alternative way of living in this world. They can see a better system grounded in our unique and inherent human right of self-determination. They can see a world where institutions and policies are reconstructed from the ground up, designed and governed by us and informed by our culture and ancient knowledge."

There is no #ClimateJustice without First Nations #GenderJustice – the two are deeply interlinked. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Isander People have long led the charge for systemic change – to transform harmful systems and safeguard the future of our planet. (2/4)
As the Traditional Custodians who have cared for Country for millennia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples continue to lead movements for climate justice and environmental protection, while being uniquely impacted by climate change and environmental destruction. Impacts that are also deeply interwoven with colonisation, which has disrupted women’s connection and custodianship of Country. A quote from the Wiyi Yani U Thangani Report 'Securing Our Rights, Securing Our Future' that reads, "Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are confronting the worst of environmental degradation and the abuse of natural resources. Many people spoke of the devastating impacts of this on the continuation of traditional practices. For certain communities, these impacts mean having to relocate from their traditional lands.”Calling for Climate Justice. The Wiyi Yani U Thangani Institute calls for recognition and meaningful participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to advance climate justice. This goes beyond acknowledging the unique and disproportionate impacts of climate change on First Nations communities. It’s about recognising and valuing the voices, knowledge systems and leadership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to develop climate strategies and solutions.

Valuing the simple act of caring can change our world. And in Mexico City, that’s exactly what local leaders and residents in the neighbourhoods of Iztapalapa did. What do you think should matter in building a better future for all of us? Have your say: bit.ly/3VBxXfG (1/5) #ClimateAction #Care
What we can learn from UTOPÍAS. UTOPÍAS began by asking a simple question: how can we build a better neighbourhood for a once-neglected community. It brought people together to imagine an alternative vision for the future – and through it, created transformative spaces where care, culture and community wellbeing are centred. UTOPÍAS provide an example of a different model for change. One that is built from the ground-up, where our relationship with the economy is reimagined and collective wellbeing is truly prioritised.

The links between care and the environment. Valuing and prioritising care also extends to caring for the environment and the natural world around us. After all, our health and wellbeing are deeply interconnected with the health and wellbeing of the planet. Iztapalapa is a neighbourhood on the frontlines of the climate crisis. It is one of the world's most water stressed megacities and has experienced record-breaking heat. Because the climate crisis does not affect everyone equally, this has flow-on impacts for women. On average Women in Iztapalapa spend between 1 - 4 hours a week on collecting water. In response to these climate impacts, UTOPÍAS provides naturally cooling public green spaces for the community to enjoy and environmental initiatives designed to strengthen the community’s resilience to heatwaves and droughts: urban gardens; local food cooperatives; Indigenous agroecology systems; a city-wide rain harvesting program and water capture park.

Why centring care matters for gender equality. Whether it’s cooking, cleaning, or caring for children and aging parents, women have long carried the unpaid labour that keeps society (and our households) running. But the UTOPÍAS model flips this script, creating neighbourhoods where care is a shared responsibility woven into the social fabric of a community. In practice, that looks like: affordable and healthy meals for those who need them; access to childcare so that parents can take on paid work; dedicated spaces for men (particularly young fathers) to learn childcare and household skills in a supportive environment as a way to challenge long-standing gender norms around caregiving; sports facilities that help Older people stay sharp physically and mentally and offer them a community to prevent loneliness or isolation; free legal and psychological support for women and girls facing gender-based violence.

Creating UTOPÍAS. Each centre is a unique reflection of the community it is in, designed through a participatory process that purposefully engages with community members. The goal is to ensure that each UTOPÍAS is set up to meet the actual needs of the people they are created for, whether that’s through preventative health services, arts and culture activities, childcare, or access to food cooperatives and urban agriculture.

Welcome to the UTOPÍAS of Iztapalapa. Iztapalapa is one of Mexico City’s most populated neighbourhood and, for a long time, considered one of its most neglected boroughs. It’s also on the frontlines of the climate crisis, facing water shortages and heat stress. In 2018, local leaders and residents came together to re-imagine what their neighbourhood could be. Together, they built a network of public spaces and community centres that have become a flagship of urban transformation for wellbeing. Designed around care, culture, connection and collective wellbeing, these spaces are known as UTOPÍAS. Their names come from a Spanish acronym for “units for transformation and organisation for inclusion and social harmony.”

September 17 is Feminist Resistance Day, led by the Women and Gender Constituency (WGC). Feminists worldwide are gathering, resisting and reimagining for climate justice and the Belém Gender Action Plan.
Feminist Movements Mobilization September 17.

#FeminisrFuturesNow #ActOnTheBelemGAP The political Moment

At COP30 in Belem, governments adopted a Belem Gender Action Plan, a hard-won victory of feminist advocacy.

A plan is only as strong as its implementation.

Climate impacts and inequalities are experienced most directly at the national and community levels, making inclusive, gender-responsive national action both critical and urgent.

Rights rollbacks, militarization, extractivism, and corporate capture continue. The Belem GAP is a tool of resistance if we use it as such. Part of the global week of action

As part of the Global Week of Action (September 14-20, 2026), the WGC is onece again claiming September 17 as a global day of feminist resistance gatherings.

This year we have one collective objective: bring the Belem Gender Action Plan to life.

We mobilized out power to demand a GAP that feminists aspire to. Nowit's time to mobilize that same power to call for full implementation of the Belem GAP. Gatherings are not just symbolic

Feminist gatherings are foundational for movement building, agenda-setting, and public pressure. They are critical to showing out governments we are here, present, and paying attention.

The road to the implementation of the Belem GAP begins now.

2026 feminist gatherings will shape how the Belem GAP will be implemented at national and subnational levels. This is our moment to turn a historic global commitment into meaningful national action.

Every decision we make now matters, because every fraction of a degree matters. With global #climate talks taking place later this year, we have an opportunity to chart a different way forward and tell our government what really matters in building a fairer, greener future for everyone. (3/4)
What comes next will depend on our ability to imagine a different way forward. Imagining ecological collapse should not be easier than imagining a world beyond the systems we have inherited. The @unep.org report released this week makes clear what many of us already know: #ClimateChange is here and it is fundamentally reshaping our world. But just accepting this as the new normal isn’t the answer. (2/4)
This report is a call to action. These findings are heavy, and feeling scared, anxious or sad right now is normal. But holding on to hope is not just important; it’s our way forward. Because despair and apathy only benefit the people and corporations who want things to stay as they are.Every decision we make now matters, because every fraction of a degree matters. We didn’t get to this point by accident. We got here because of decisions by powerful corporations and individuals who for too long have prioritised profit over the wellbeing of our communities and the places we love. But that also means it is possible to make different decisions about what comes next.

There are no good outcomes above 1.5C. Which is exactly why giving up #hope now isn't the answer...🧵(1/4) #ClimateCrisis #ClimateChange #Overshoot
We now have no possible pathways to keep global heating below 1.5C. We are now living in an overshoot world: one where global temperatures will rise beyond 1.5C above pre-industrial levels by 2030. A world above 1.5C is not a safe one, with every moment we stay above the threshold creating a more dangerous and unfair future for all of us. A world with: food shortages; unsafe air to breathe and water to drink; more frequent and intense natural disasters; more lives and livelihoods at risk; entire communities facing partial or complete submersion; and entire ecosystems lost.
