Welcome to the UTOPÍAS of Iztapalapa. Iztapalapa is one of Mexico City’s most populated neighbourhood and, for a long time, considered one of its most neglected boroughs. It’s also on the frontlines of the climate crisis, facing water shortages and heat stress. In 2018, local leaders and residents came together to re-imagine what their neighbourhood could be. Together, they built a network of public spaces and community centres that have become a flagship of urban transformation for wellbeing.

Designed around care, culture, connection and collective wellbeing, these spaces are known as UTOPÍAS. Their names come from a Spanish acronym for “units for transformation and organisation for inclusion and social harmony.”

The political Moment

At COP30 in Belem, governments adopted a Belem Gender Action Plan, a hard-won victory of feminist advocacy.

A plan is only as strong as its implementation.

Climate impacts and inequalities are experienced most directly at the national and community levels, making inclusive, gender-responsive national action both critical and urgent.

Rights rollbacks, militarization, extractivism, and corporate capture continue. The Belem GAP is a tool of resistance if we use it as such.

Part of the global week of action

As part of the Global Week of Action (September 14-20, 2026), the WGC is onece again claiming September 17 as a global day of feminist resistance gatherings.

This year we have one collective objective: bring the Belem Gender Action Plan to life.

We mobilized out power to demand a GAP that feminists aspire to. Nowit's time to mobilize that same power to call for full implementation of the Belem GAP.

Gatherings are not just symbolic

Feminist gatherings are foundational for movement building, agenda-setting, and public pressure. They are critical to showing out governments we are here, present, and paying attention.

The road to the implementation of the Belem GAP begins now.

2026 feminist gatherings will shape how the Belem GAP will be implemented at national and subnational levels. This is our moment to turn a historic global commitment into meaningful national action.

We now have no possible pathways to keep global heating below 1.5C. We are now living in an overshoot world: one where global temperatures will rise beyond 1.5C above pre-industrial levels by 2030. A world above 1.5C is not a safe one, with every moment we stay above the threshold creating a more dangerous and unfair future for all of us. A world with: food shortages; unsafe air to breathe and water to drink; more frequent and intense natural disasters; more lives and livelihoods at risk; entire communities facing partial or complete submersion; and entire ecosystems lost. Did you know #gender can affect how people view and respond to the #ClimateCrisis?

Studies have shown men tend to be less worried about climate change, less concerned about environmental protection and less willing to engage in eco-friendly behaviours compared to women: 20% of Australian men agreed with the statement “Until we are sure that global warming is really a problem, we should not take any steps that would have economic costs" compared to 12% of Australia women; 34% of Australian men agreed with the statement “The problem of global warming should be addressed, but its effects will be gradual, so we can deal with the problem gradually by taking steps that are low in cost" compared to 36% of Australian women; 45% of Australian men agree with the statement “Global warming is a serious and pressing problem. We should begin taking steps now even if this involves significant costs" compared to 52% of Australian women (source: Lowy Institute 2026). A few things could account for these differences…

For many of us, the images that have stayed seared in our memories from that summer are the blackened skies, exhausted firefighters and convoys of trucks rolling in to rebuild. But disasters also create invisible work: checking on neighbours; organising food and supplies; caring for children, older people and relatives; supporting communities through recovery. Traditional gender norms mean this care work often falls disproportionately on women.

The truth behind the current wave of #AbortionCare attacks in Australia? These bills are not grounded in evidence and form part of broader strategy to chip away at #ReproductiveRights and #BodilyAutonomy by introducing incremental barriers to abortion care over time. 🧵(1/4)

medical abortions was voted down in Queensland. In New South Wales, John Ruddick’s bill that would threaten doctors with up to five years in prison for providing abortion care under the guise of stopping ‘sex-selective abortions’ (despite little evidence of this happening) was debated.

This is her third attack on abortion care since 2024 and comes just six months after her last bill of this kind was voted on. While that bill was defeated, the result of the South Australian election means there are more socially conservative members of the upper house who will now vote on this bill.

It’s the anti-rights movement’s take on the Trojan Horse: disguise discriminatory policies in the language of #HumanRights to boost their legitimacy, slowly undo progress on #GenderEquality and undermine the very human rights framework they are co-opting. 🧵 (1/6)

In their own words, anti-rights groups like to “use the weapons of our opponents and turn them against them.” In practice, that looks like using the language of human rights to boost the legitimacy of their claims – all while working to undermine established human rights frameworks.

In their re-framing, attacks on abortion care become a defence of the ‘rights of the unborn’ or the ‘right to life from conception’. In some cases, this might come from sincerely held views and beliefs. But ultimately, anti-rights groups weaponise this kind of messaging to build support for policies that - at their core – are about denying people’s bodily autonomy and weakening the frameworks that guarantee human rights across the world.
