Despite navigating heartbreak, I: 1. Wrote two short stories and just submitted one to a contest 2. Got my website back up and running, though it is simple (but that's okay!) 3. Started a Substack and wrote my first article. I'm doing pretty alright I think. And it was a welcome distraction.

But my mom had already told them I was gay and, harmless outing aside (😂), it really helped to be able to come back and not have to pick up from scratch. From afar, they had been keeping tabs and rooting for me. And we’re just happy to have their baby back. It felt so good. I love them.

When I first accepted myself as queer, I was really worried about my familial relationships. I knew it would be a shift for people. So I hid. And I grieved the relationships that were withering due to the distance I created. I missed my goddies but didn’t know how to reconnect.

Today I got to have a sit down dinner and Kiki with my two fly ass godmothers. And we talked about mental health. They asked me about my dating life without judgment. They empathized with the challenges of being an adult. I’m genuinely so warmed to have spent time with them.

I also think sometimes ppl try too hard to "write" as opposed to doing the requisite work of witnessing, hearing, and feeling. I believe the most resonant creative writing happens when we write to the quick of the thing. But to do that, you have to experience it. In earnest. Without pretense.
