No matter what you've been told, salary season doesn't start in December. If you need a promotion or a salary increase, you need to start pusing for that in September.

Every company now claims to be AI-first. They are not. You and I know that slapping an LLM on top of messy dat doesn't make you AI-native. But fighting AI won't fix this either. I only expose analytics datasets. Not redy for analytics = not ready for AI. What's your way?

A project that is 80% done and has zero users isn't 80% complete. It's 100% waste. Every data team has one. Yours probably has three.

Just got my hands on this gem by Nick Valiotti. Just a couple of chapters in, I can say, this is a must-read, no matter if you work in data or with data. PS: Thank you so much for the personal note, buddy!

When something breaks, you answer DMs one by one like it's 2012. Your "data products" have a Slack channel and someone's patience. Read the article in the thread.

You track pipeline latency down to the millisecond. Your career reasoning lives in a volatile memory cache that clears every time you close your laptop.

The 3 signals that define your output when you stop writing code: → The team ships on a predictable rhythm → Stakeholders stop escalating to your boss → Senior ICs grow into roles you used to hold

Rushing into a migration to show value quickly is a big mistake. Yet, that's what most leaders in data do when joining a new org. There's always a reason behind the legacy. Learn the reason. Then, if needed, do your migration. There are better ways to impress management.

Stop buying software for simple problems. AI makes the "build versus buy" decision easy by turning logic into tools. I replaced years of messy spreadsheets with a custom app for Bulgarian ham radio frequencies in one afternoon. Stop adapting your workflow to a rigid vendor UI.

Data folks write terrible code. Here's what I mean I sometimes see folks using: - linters - formatters - tests But I rarely see them measuring: - test coverage - cycomatic complexity - code maintainability Either start writing good code. Or stop complaining about AI slop.

Talented engineers leave when the process stops them from finishing work. They move to companies where the system handles the friction. A senior engineer spending 20% of their time on deployments costs the company one full day of salary every week. www.datagibberish.com/p/deployment...

Most data engineers fail the whiteboard interview before they write a line of code. How you think you pass a whiteboard interview: - Memorize LeetCode solutions - Suggest tech stacks - Draw diagrams immediately - Work in silence

The best data engineering work is invisible. No outages. No angry PMs. No broken dashboards. Which means… No credit. No praise. No promotion. You prevented the fire. So no one believes it was ever real.

Modern data career path: - Pay $300 to memorize a vendor brochure - Pass a test with 4 answer choices - Add “Certified Engineer” to LinkedIn - Get billed out at $300/hour - Get paid the same as last week

The fastest way to lose trust after a pipeline failure is naming the tool first. Explain impact, not libraries. Flow stopped. Signal broke. Decision worsened it. Guardrail fixed it. Systems > syntax.

Data folks often ask "How can I give more value to my stakeholders?" A better question is: "How am I helping the business?" You already do a lot. Know your value.

Do you type or dictate when you interact with the AI? Dictation weird initially, you know, like I'm talking to myself. Now It reminds to the times when when I'd sit with a junior and how to write code. PS: Don't do it in public unless you want to make people feel awkward.

Your stack is a confession. Buying a $50k platform to move 100MB shows mediocrity. Seniority is the courage to stay boring: » DuckDB over Spark » Cron over K8s » SQL over lock-in Stop building resume-driven graveyards. PS: Read the full article in my latest newsletter issues.

Resolutions are bugs. A wish is not a strategy. You don't need motivation. You need a priority queue. Saying yes to X means saying no to Y. Remove the choice. Build the gate.

You don’t get roadmap influence by begging. You earn it by being predictable, boring, and right. Predictability builds trust. Trust buys autonomy. Autonomy creates influence. Ship clean. Communicate risk early. Then you won’t ask for a seat. They’ll save you one.

Most data engineers don’t burn out from bad code. They burn out from bad scope. Seniors say “I’ll try.” Staffs ask “Which moves the business most?” Clarity = leverage. When everything’s important, nothing is. If nothing breaks when you skip it, you’ve found your first no.

Most “data leaders” I know don’t have the title. They’re the ones others ask: “How should we model this?” “Does this metric make sense?” Leadership isn’t a badge. It’s a reputation for clarity under pressure.

Silence kills data careers More than incompetence You think it makes you look in control. It doesn’t. It makes people nervous. Leaders don’t see effort. They see absence. Fix the bug, but show the work. Because great engineers solve problems. Visible engineers get promoted.

Hate “AI strategy” meetings? Skip the roadmap. Make AI boring, safe & default. Rule: Every task starts with an AI draft. Tool: Whatever your team actually uses. Goal: Faster output, same brains. We don’t outsource thinking. We outsource typing.

If I had to start from zero in data again here’s what I’d do: 1/ 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 Learn how data really lives. SQL, indexes, joins. Don’t rush. Understanding query plans will save you 80% of pain later.

AI won’t replace you. Mediocrity will. Without real skills, your only “edge” is prompt engineering. But if everyone can do that, you have no edge. AI makes the average faster, not better. Your moat isn’t prompts. It’s judgment.

Hate writing docs? That’s where most engineers lose leverage. A clear scoping doc stops scope creep, aligns stakeholders, and protects your time. Use a template (link in the 🧵). Feed it to ChatGPT. Edit the output. AI doesn’t replace documentation. It removes excuses.

If Fivetran buys dbt, fine. If Snowflake buys Fivetran, fine. If AWS buys everything, still fine. Because you can’t acquire good engineering judgment. And that’s what actually ships value.

AI picked my daughter’s birthday present. I’ve never had a sense of smell in my life. She wanted perfume. I snapped photos in the store, asked ChatGPT what to buy. It circled the bottles. She loved it. Thought it was magic. AI doesn’t blush.

Wild how many “senior” data folks can’t explain what they do. Meanwhile inside Data Gibberish, people are learning to turn noise into narrative and getting paid for it. This is where future data leaders are made. You in or what?

I vibecoded a full app in a few hours. Electron + Cursor + chaos. → Wrote specs in a file → AI acted as PM → Coded task-by-task 𝗣𝗿𝗼 𝘁𝗶𝗽: test each step, commit when clean. You don’t need Jira. You need curiosity + fast feedback loops. Build selfishly.

The real reason your metrics don’t match It’s not the data. It’s the org chart. → Marketing defines “lead” one way → Sales defines it another → Finance has a third version The data isn’t broken. The business is misaligned. Fix the definitions. Then fix the dashboards.
