Nobody ever does, that's why we're still having the same debate 10 years later

If you were to ever rejoin, you'll be part of the rule MAKERS. The problem is that you want to be the ONLY ONE setting the rules.

A pot filler isn't cheffy, it's American. If you've watched enough HGTV you've seen them installed in a lot of (home) kitchens.

There is not much of a Eurocentric dress code in a UK office. For starters, in most European offices it's totally ok to wear jeans or shorts on a regular weekday. There was no dress code let alone 'dress down Friday' in any office in mainland Europe I worked in.

I am getting tired of this conversation. If you truly want to rejoin, then you need to try and understand what the EU is beyond what you read in your precious PDFs. My guess is that you STILL think it's possible to have your cake and eat it. Was never going to happen. Toen niet, nu niet, nooit niet.

It's none of your (or mine for that matter) business why a sovereign nation uses the opt-out they negotiated.

The real pro EU people of the UK will have a huge fight on their hands…hopefully they will eventually win. Still far too much exceptionalism even on the side of those that say that they want to join the EU.

I think you totally misunderstand what the EU is, you read the words but didn't get them. Pegging currency to the euro is a choice about stability, totally different from adopting the euro or the ECB. Also, the EU is not a checklist, it's a political relationship between sovereign nations.

The UK didn't compromise on the euro, as you have been by others as well, so you may have "corrected them" but it was a wrong interpretation of the facts, regardless the article you had open. Also "them"? WE are not the EU, but if we were, that attitude doesn't get you back into the club.

You may have read the words, but it seems you didn't understand them (or perhaps you missed a couple of those A4s), otherwise you would have known that Denmark has a treaty exemption from adopting the euro.

Where did you compromise? You get an opt-out. That's not a compromise.

Disagreement is not "behaving badly", it is also not AGAINST the EU. Disagreement is part of the negotiation process WITHIN the EU to find an outcome that everyone can live with, even when nobody gets everything they wanted. That's how it's supposed to work. It's not a battle with winners and losers

The EU compromised on the euro, not the UK. Or perhaps better said, the EU, which at the time included the UK, found a compromise around euro adoption.

I'm still baffled by people that allegedly want to rejoin a club they have no real understanding of and don't want to really understand it either. The EU is not a tyrant and Denmark doesn't have to adopt the euro if it doesn't want to. Maybe read "inside the deal" by Stefaan de Rijnck?

I agree and if anything, I want an EU wide referendum on whether we want to welcome the UK back into the EU. For now my answer would be a clear NO - and that meay voting against my personal interest - an alien concept to most Brits.

Itsme_Sannie @itsme-sandee.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
EU is about compromising. UK never understood that concept and still doesn't. That's why this country (UK) is such a mess - and most people won't even know it's a mess because most of them never crossed more than one border, if any at all

Just one 100% Dutch. One EU passport is enough 🤣 Could get GB but I have been resisting it big time. Don't want to unless I really really really have to. We can do languages too. 4 for me, 5 if you count Swiss German plus pretty fluent in number 6. Doing Mandarin on Duolingo but that doesn't count 🤣

Mostly those outside Schengen done understand it, like those British that fly to Spain and back. Those that take the tunnel and drive onwards to the Netherlands, they appreciate it. Or those that flew Air France from Basel airport before Schengen.

For me NL, CH, DK, FR and now UK, also never in Sweden. My French colleague in Switzerland did because her German husband got transferred there. She said it was basically impossible to get a job unless you spoke Swedish (or got transferred).

The EU will insist on ALL four freedoms and won't want a Swiss style agreement. They may be lenient on Schengen or the euro. EFTA will resist the UK joining. The EU would want the UK to define what it wants (beyond cakeism) and whether it can live with the FOUR freedoms for the next 50-odd years.

The first problem is that the UK never really applied FoM. No registration, no IDs, no sending people onwards if no job/income after three months. When I moved to CH I had to go to the Gemeinde, had a B-permit. After 5 yrs C-permit (PR). When I left for UK, again to the Gemeinde. In UK ... Nothing!

There are going to be millions and millions more climate refugees in the coming years. And the energy policies of the West are directly responsible for this. If they want to reduce this number, they need to change over to renewables stat.

If they were only connected, high speed is a bonus. If you live in Chertsey or Weybridge you can't take a train to LHR and taxi charges £100 one way so ppl drive and add to congestion. Plans sadly rejected: www.modernrailways.com/article/time... I understood that T5 station is already built

We'd need a Dutch system where everyone (!) who LIVED in NL 50 yrs before retirement receives a (taxable) AOW pension, pro rata. None of the you have to work 10 years first. For that to work, we need to increase other taxes and guess what, nobody in UK wants to pay for others, including future self.

and that's why it would help if these "soppy stories" gave the actual facts. Right now, they are all "look how bad Sweden treats us" articles, but Sweden surely has reasons to expel some Brits and not others.

Permanent residency doesn't require applying, after 5 yrs CH moved me automatically from a B to a C permit, but I had to register upon arrival. So maybe we are talking about different things. In Sweden you do need to register with the authorities and you still need to work/study/self-suff to get PR.

Itsme_Sannie @itsme-sandee.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
In most EU countries (and Switzerland) you need to register with the authorities upon arrival (and deregister when you leave). Under FoM, you have 3 months to find a job or prove you have enough money to self-sustain, if not... au revoir!

Itsme_Sannie @itsme-sandee.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Apologies, didn't read properly. Most of these stories lack crucial information because I just don't buy that someone who applied on time and truly was in a job/self-employed, studying or self-sufficient at the end of the transition period would not qualify for residency, so something is missing.

Make it the FOM, plus the other three Fs (and then worry about the Euro and Schengen...) For starters the four freedoms are not for cherry picking. Let's have that conversation first.

"....since 2017 when he emigrated". Emigrated where to? When did he arrive in Sweden? 2017 was well before official Brexit date, did he not apply on time? If so, why not? Or did he arrive in Sweden afterwards? Article doesn't say. Sloppy.
