Great article in Playbill by @itsmargarethall.bsky.social on SINNERS, what makes it a brilliant musical, and the form of diegetic musicals (my favorite kind of musical).

Is Sinners a Musical? Yes, And

It's a diegetic movie musical that's also expanding the boundaries of genre.

I've seen Mamma Mia reach /insane/ "oh wait is doing theatre cool?!" mileage in a high school setting. You can get away with doing it with two sets (one interior and one exterior) and the cast can balloon huge depending on how much you want to fill out the ensemble of townsfolk.

Blood, Sweat & Queers ed. @itsmargarethall.bsky.social and @jamieisreading.bsky.social Vampirism is inherently queer. Blood, Sweat & Queers opens with a killer foreword by Hall and carries this theme through to the end. #bookreview 🌈📚💙

ARC paperback of Blood, Sweat & Queers edited by Margaret Hall and Jamie Ryu propped against big vampire teeth and faux lilies with a matching bookmark peeking between the pages.

Oh of course, I more mean that this is egg on Lukowski's face: there were multiple lawsuits about how similar to Fleetwood Mac this play is!

Rest in Peace Brian Wilson. An artistic genius whose public struggles kickstarted convos about mental health that continue to save lives. I know countless artists who have gotten help specifically because of Brian. Go listen to Pet Sounds, and check in with people you love who may be struggling.

Another Tony Awards ceremony in the books. As always, the hardest yet most rewarding day of the season. Head on over to Playbill to see our continuing coverage, and buy your favorite theatre journalists a drink if you see them in the wild this month. Let the next season begin!

Five Reminders as we head into Tony Sunday 1. You're allowed to care about things; you're also allowed not to care. Apathy is not a virtue, but cognizance is 2. Broadway is, first and foremost, a commercial industry. It isn't an art form. A lot of things will make sense the moment you accept that

3. There is no objectivity in art, or in analyzing it. If your favorite show or performer is not awarded, that does not denigrate your taste or experience. 4. Every person you see on that screen will have been poked and prodded to the point of lunacy. Give them grace if they seem a bit delirious.

I’m thrilled to bits to be a fellow for this year’s National Critics Institute at the O'Neill. Joining this prestigious program is an honor. I love the art of analysis, and I am eager to sharpen my pen with this illustrious group of writers. Now, where is my George Jean Nathan baseball cap?

It’s beyond surreal. He has learned how to slow his heart and breath rate, reduce involuntary rapid eye movements, even how to manually engage tendons most of us don’t even realize we have. It’s an insanely athletic performance, and I wish more people were recognizing that aspect.

Spent the better part of this morning lamenting how much I miss my favorite rose garden in Edinburgh. Lo and behold, look at what was waiting on my block when I came home, just waiting to be stooped. It’s a real oil painting in a custom frame. Now to find the wall space…

A beautiful, very large oil painting of garden roses in a vase. The roses are various shades of pastel pink and peach, with the vase rendered in blue tones. The frame is gold. The entire painting is balanced on a large black chair, against a desk and bookshelves that are filled to the brim with colorful items, ranging from books and magazines to family photos and bronze busts.

Hannah Moscovitch is one of the most fascinating playwrights working today, and it was a pleasure to get deep in the weeds with her on her play Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes, what it means to have Hugh Jackman as her champion, and her television work over on Interview with the Vampire AMC.

Tired of playing a broken game of telephone with your health insurance, doctor, and pharmacy? Turns out calling everyone and merging them into a call where their doublespeak and fabrications are immediately obvious suddenly clears up issues within 10 minutes.

The warlords who sacked rome did not intend to doom Western Europe to centuries of ignorance. It was not a foreseeable consequence of their actions. The same cannot be said of the sweeping attack on human knowledge and progress that the Trump administration is now undertaking—a deliberate destruction of education, science, and history, conducted with a fanaticism that recalls the Dark Ages that followed Rome’s fall.

I don't miss much about living in Amish Country, but the pretzel bread is HIGH on my yearn list. If a baked good could be pretzeled, they had it. NYC needs to catch up! A bakery clerk told me I should sprinkle salt on top of a normal burger bun and I almost bit my tongue off trying not to holler.

Margaret Hall @itsmargarethall.bsky.social · 12/05/2025

All I have wanted, all day, is a pretzel bun burger w/ cheddar. A simple request. And yet. I can't order out, because the Emmy Burger has a waitlist. I can't make it at home, because every bakery in the city is suddenly out of pretzel buns. At this point, I'm going to have to bake the bun myself.

Talamasca would be great! I'd also love to see location candles, like a jasmine heavy Rue Royale, a musky Dubai, and something powdery for Paris. Maybe even a lemony scent for San Francisco given the cleaning fluid Armand used to fix things up post crash-out?
