Movie you've watched more than 6 times with a gif. Hard mode: no Star Trek, Star Wars, LOTR, or Marvel.

It's more of a general suggestion, but anything from @folkandmyth.bsky.social is an instant hit. They've got a full Vampire series set in Montreal that spans VtM, Werewolf, and Hunter. Lots of gorgeous one shots and short series' that are palatable.

When you find out the yarn you have been using to crotchet a blanket has been discontinued. And then you buy yarn to try and finish it but the new yarn color is just wrong that you hate it. 😭

And I don't want to come off as this is me saying I believe anyone who has earned a degree didn't deserve it. Because I absolutely don't. I believe they earned the degree. I just don't believe the expectations are equal across the board and that's my issue with academia. End rant.

000

Jaqulin 🌼 @itscaecilia.bsky.social · 18/05/2025

At the end of the day, all I'm saying is that academia is not set up as neurodivergent friendly. Regardless of what you think of academics and what their mental spectrum may be. It's set up in such a way that only a small subset of people will succeed regardless of perceived success.

100

Jaqulin 🌼 @itscaecilia.bsky.social · 18/05/2025

But seriously? Even amongst students with the same advisor the requirements can vary. Which is where I burnt out the first time around. The emotional toll it took on me to watch people who hadn't done half of what I did get a degree twice as good was devastating. And I'm still not healed from that.

100

Jaqulin 🌼 @itscaecilia.bsky.social · 18/05/2025

Because that other person's advisor DID believe they met the requirements or that person wouldn't have graduated. But not so much for me at this point in time. And yes, I'm being vague about this. I understand that there is a lot of politics that happen in academia. More than I'd like.

100

Jaqulin 🌼 @itscaecilia.bsky.social · 18/05/2025

And here's the thing. Requirements are subjective when getting a thesis degree. Every advisor has their own opinion about what is needed to complete a thesis. Which is where the unfairness comes in. That's where I struggle emotionally with it.

100

Jaqulin 🌼 @itscaecilia.bsky.social · 18/05/2025

And don't get me wrong, I love the research. I love my job. I love what I do. But I just want the degree. Because I have earned it. I have earned it 3 times over. And it's so shitty when I'm told that I've earned it but I haven't hit the requirements yet.

100

Jaqulin 🌼 @itscaecilia.bsky.social · 18/05/2025

Where I, someone without a PhD, has my name on 7-8 published papers - one of those being a first author - and I'm told that "I need another first author paper to finish my project"? What kind of bullshit is that?

100

Jaqulin 🌼 @itscaecilia.bsky.social · 18/05/2025

Thesis degrees are the most nonsensical, bullshit we have in academia. What do you mean this person has a PhD but only did a semester's worth of research and got one research paper in a journal that their advisor is the editor for?

100

Jaqulin 🌼 @itscaecilia.bsky.social · 18/05/2025

And I'm talking mainly about thesis degrees as opposed to non-thesis. Non-thesis degrees are very similar to undergraduate degrees but expand on the content in such a way that you can get other certifications and better career opportunities.

100

Jaqulin 🌼 @itscaecilia.bsky.social · 18/05/2025

I put "can't make it" in quotes because graduate school is absolutely a networking contest at the end of the day. It's all about convincing a small group of people that you're "ready" for a higher degree. Anyone can make it. And I will die on that hill. The problem is that it's stacked against you.

100

Jaqulin 🌼 @itscaecilia.bsky.social · 18/05/2025

As someone who is currently in graduate school and has been in graduate school once before, I can say without a doubt that graduate school is incredibly unfair and that perceived unfairness is why a lot of neurodivergent people "can't make it".
