We have recently launched a Visiting Scholar Grant at Rochester to work with the Edward C. Atwater Collection of American Popular Medicine and Health Reform. See attached flyer for details! #histmed #fellowship
The History of Medicine Section in the Edward G. Miner Library at the University of Rochester is pleased to announce its first annual Edward C. Atwater Visiting Scholar Grant for the study of materials in the Edward C. Atwater Collection of American Popular Medicine and Health Reform.
In the autumn of 1994, Edward C. Atwater, M.D. made the Miner Library the repository for his personal collection of books, periodicals, pamphlets, almanacs, trade cards, printed ephemera and manuscript material pertaining to American "popular medicine." Materials in the Atwater Collection represent the full range of medical self-help among Americans throughout the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth century. For a full description of the collection and how to search it, visit the History of Medicine’s website.
The Atwater Visiting Scholar Grant provides support to scholars or graduate students to cover the cost of their travel to Rochester, accommodation, and expenses during their time of stay. The award is up to $2,000 for one week of research in any given year.
We welcome applications from all interested researchers currently residing in the United States or Canada, regardless of their institutional association, race, cultural background, ability, sexual orientation, gender, or socioeconomic status. Applications from scholars utilizing traditional methods of archival and bibliographical research are encouraged as are applications from individuals who wish to pursue creative, interdisciplinary, and non-traditional approaches to conducting research using the Edward C. Atwater Collection.

A complete grant application includes:
A research proposal (2 pages, single-spaced, maximum)
Two references
Budget, including proposed dates for research trip
A successful applicant will be expected to share their findings after their visit.
Please submit your proposals and any questions to Anna Smith, Head of History of Medicine Section, anna_smith1@urmc.rochester.edu

Also, most weird find in Milwaukee…courtesy of the Milwaukee Public Museum store. I have lots of questions.
A children’s board book with a teal spine and a black cover that reads, “Artificial Intelligence for babies”. Yes that’s the title.

Had this at the airport and loved it! My favorite chai latte combo at the moment is hot, with oat milk, two pumps of coconut syrup, one pump of hazelnut syrup. Taste like fall year round.

Also I saw so many doggies, but this one, was my favorite:
This is Jocko with a Hedgehog (also known as Portrait of a Terrier), an 1828 oil painting by British artist Sir Edwin Landseer. The painting depicts a white terrier named Jocko, owned by Owen Williams, encountering a hedgehog in a rocky landscape.

Wrapping up the #MLA2026 conference and got to learn so much and see some great frolleagues. But overall, Milwaukee has been amazing.
A colorful four story mural of a person dancing with their back turned on a building between an alleyway with a black and white message “hometown love is what we’re made of”.Two paintings of a family covered in colorful patterns. One frame is bright lime green and the other scarlet red. This diptych is titled "A Pattern of Families Divided by the Greater < Than" and was created in 2024 by Milwaukee-based artist David Najib Kasir. The paintings depict the family of Maruf Al Dayea, a Syrian man who immigrated to the United States after fleeing the civil war in his home country.A view of downtown Milwaukee with various buildings and trees scattered across for miles. The Milwaukee River snakes down through the city, segmented by draw bridges on an overcast day. Photo taken high above from the Hyatt Regent.A building made of white and glass in the shape of a sailboat known as the Milwaukee Art Museum, on an overcast day and draped by green lawns on either side.
