If we make fun of the way someone looks or smells or moves, instead of calling out their policies, speech or behaviour, we're aligning ourselves with those whose aim is to other, harm or disappear people who don't conform to a narrow idea of "ok". It's worth reading up about ugly laws.

This is tangential, but I was floored when I discovered Americans rhyme shone with stone, rather than with gone, like we say it. Emu and puma made me giggle but shone was so confusing to me!

This happened to me on amtrak. It was the first time I had traveled on my own in the US, and he kept looking at me the whole time. It was a five hour journey. I asked a group of Indian students if I could just chat with them for a bit, and they were really lovely, but it put me off solo travel.

We had mini-splits and one thing to be aware of is that if you're in a cold climate with poor insulation you're going to have very dry air. Perhaps not an issue for everyone but was definitely something I wish I had known beforehand.

Any advice for integrating a new four year old cat with a resident three year old? Both indoor cats. The resident was the runt of the litter and she's small and feisty. The incoming is a very friendly flame point Siamese who has had difficulty with dogs but not cats. Current cat:
Black cat with white spot on her chest and white whiskers sitting on a grey fabric.

This is a great excuse to share a really excellent book about economics by Ha-Joon Chang, who moved to the UK just at the time when food started to get interesting. It's called Edible Economics and I'd recommend it to anyone, not even for the economics but just for the writing.

My experience has been that queer people, almost to a person, have been thoughtful and kind about masking/disability, but straight people who consider themselves queer allies, are not at all kind and thoughtful about it. Like being an ally to one marginalized community absolves them of other care.

Have they ever read Alice Wong?? I would hazard a guess that Alice has done more for disability advocacy in the past few decades than anyone and she was amazingly, deftly angry. Anger is like electricity - it is a power source that can be used for good or evil, but definitely useful.

Right now we're in a covid surge and the best thing you can do to support other people's precious brains is to stay home if you're sick, test yourself for covid, and if you are unable to stay home wear a mask when you are with others. We have to care for each other better.

Thank you, Erin. I don't know why it's so hard for people to realize that there are kids who are immunocompromised, kids who are at high risk of hospitalization and long covid. Why would you make a joke out of their parent who is wearing a mask to protect them?

I hate fundraising! But I'm on a fundraising committee for an organization that does Housing First work, because it's the most effective way I can contribute. It also means I've learned there are very few who don't care about homelessness - most are delighted to give money to something that works.

Tonight we light a candle in memory of those we have lost to #SevereME. We mourn. We hold all who are mourning in love. We come together as people with debilitating illness, caregivers, partners, allies, advocates, researchers, & clinicians. #SevereMEday
A single glowing candle with blurred lights in the background honoring those lost to severe ME on August 8.

I am very irritated when people ask me about it, because if you have a child who is at high risk for hospitalization it's not something you want to talk about all the time. I wonder if these same people ask why someone is wearing a hearing aid, or using a cane.

This comment section is so disappointing! Kids, especially babies, make noise, and libraries are really the only third space that exists where you can be with your kids indoors without paying. If libraries are only accessible to silent kids you'd lose a whole bunch of patrons.

Though we're blessedly on a break from the smoky air, to be told not to use your stove at the same time as you're warned to cook all your vegetables, during school break when there's just been a dangerous heat dome, is pretty grim.

Thank you for coming to Rochester. I'm not from here, but I love it here. The people are so wonderful - I hope you get a chance to meet with some. If you can stop by the M. K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence or the nearby Phillis Wheatley library, you'll get a good sense of neighborhood life.

That is awful!! I'm so sorry. I'm not surprised you're thinking of staying in. One more very anecdotal hint is that there's this insect repellent soap by RAD that for some reason has been very successful for us (and for others at the clinic I went for treatment).

As someone with this life altering disease I have tips to make it safer for you! The number one tip is to use a lint roller on your whole self to pick up any ticks that are crawling on you. Light coloured clothing, tucking trousers into socks, permethrin treated shoes, well mown grass. Lots more...

There is no a/c in hospitals in the UK apart from operating rooms. I have a family member on a ward who got through last week but can you imagine how it is for patients and staff? I have been an environmentalist my whole life, but what's the point if you're throwing away lives for a meagre return?

When I was diagnosed with ME I was told about pacing and how I should slowly increase my exercise as I began to tolerate it. I spent 10 years trying to find a baseline that didn't worsen my symptoms. I kept at it because this was the only treatment I knew of. It completely wrecked my sense of self.

It's always such a relief to read the sane response. I've been flabbergasted by nonviolence- and adjacent groups using AI to create visuals for Facebook posts. When I gently try to have them understand the link between AI, data centers, destruction of local tribal land, etc. they push back. Alarming

Queen Victoria honoured her beloved husband with a gold statue - it's a surprising thing to see in Kensington Gardens! Prince Albert is not particularly celebrated in the UK by anyone, nor did he have much power, so it's fairly innocuous.

Eugenics is so self-defeating. Here's my question: if a "healthy" person has thoughts and takes actions that cause suffering, illness and death to others, is that person actually healthy in a holistic sense?

I don't mind if you don't read my posts, and I have no expertise here other than doing a deep dive into the connection between data centers and cost of utilities going up, even if they're not in the direct locale. This is enough to make a lot of people very angry.

My Nan from up north had many sayings. When people were similar to each other she'd say they look like a "set of jugs". My sister, working in a school, says to twins waiting for the principal: "you ok there? You look like a set of jugs!" But their understanding of this phrase is very different...

We often go visit this little pond in a park nearby. The killdeer pair recently returned and sometimes there's an interesting raptor. This time, however, we stumbled upon a bacchanalian riot of an extraordinary number of massive toads. Like an unexpected brawl at your usually empty local pub.

This kind of illness teaches me that I am good at being lonely. I think you probably are too. It's an underrecognized skill. That said, I'd be delighted to have a new friend if you'd enjoy having one! I remember you were working on babesia treatment, so we have that in common, awful as it is!
