Key Voices: Steven Dean on global tax justice, racial capitalism, and dismantling Global Jim Crow
"If you think the Bahamas destroyed your global tax system, then you've got a pretty terrible global tax system." So says Steven Dean, tax scholar, author, and CESR ally. For Steven, tax rules are not just technical instruments. They are deeply political tools that determine who has access to resources, and who does not.

Tax scholars tend to view historical figures like Edwin Seligman as a sort of #woke #Gandalf. Looking closer reveals a more complex reality. Seligman, for example, had close ties to a group of his @columbiauniversity.bsky.social colleagues infamous for deeply racist and influential scholarship.

Are jungles... bad now? And how exactly would a purported worldwide tax hike prevent "the jungle growing back"? The US has quietly spent more than half a century shielding multinationals from tax. It's not working anymore. #taxjustice #corporations.

U.S. withdraws from Pillar 2, global minimum tax in jeopardy | Itai Grinberg posted on the topic | LinkedIn
Challenges continue to mount for Pillar 2 and the global minimum tax. “The Americans have withdrawn, and this concept no longer has a future," Chancellor Merz said, adding that the federal government in Berlin would now take up the issue https://lnkd.in/eqjvz-q9. But https://lnkd.in/edpfk-Gx Pretty soon we may be back to the U.S. having the world's only global corporate minimum tax on the profits of domestically-headquartered multinational corporations (MNCs). Most of the U.S. private sector international tax community spent a generation advocating for a level playing field in international tax. Everyone who participated in or believed in that generation-long advocacy effort — which made the level playing field the U.S. international tax community’s number one tax policy request — may wish to reflect on where we are and where we should go. Otherwise I fear the world will look more like the jungle growing back in a year or two, in ways that are not presently being anticipated.

Before FTX collapsed, Sam Bankman Fried and his father, Joe Bankman spent a lot of time in the Bahamas, my childhood home. Before that, Bankman was just a tax nerd. Hear us discuss "the disruptive power of digital" here: taxmavenpodcast.com/... #ftx #sambankmanfried

From "I Paid My Income Tax Today" to "The Government Already Knows" (Joe Bankman) | The Tax Maven
Professor Joe Bankman has spent years working to harness technology for taxpayers. In today’s episode, he explains what a prepopulated tax return is and why much of the world uses them but the United States does not. We discuss the disruptive power of digital and how it is remaking the tax landscape in favor big multinationals while making it harder for small taxpayers to hide their income. Bankman also offers his perspective on what we can all learn from California’s budget woes and why its situation is both better and worse than that of the nation as a whole. The pencil question about the song “I Paid My Income Tax Today” comes from a book by Larry Zelenak.
