Of course the Republicans would be worse. What the mainstream Democrat seems incapable of accepting is that, for an even remotely functioning conscience, there exists a point beyond which relative harm can no longer offset absolute evil. For a lot of people, genocide is that point. Suddenly, an otherwise very persuasive argument takes on a different meaning: “Vote for the liberal though he harms you because the conservative will harm you more” starts to sound a lot like “Vote for the liberal though he harms you because the conservative might harm me, too.”

In reality, not a single Western politician or party, not a single government anywhere in the world, can be expected to change when constantly rewarded this way. The argument in favor of voting for the lesser evil is frequently made in good faith, by people who have plenty to lose should the greater evil win. But it also establishes the lowest of benchmarks: Want my vote? Be less monstrous than the monsters.

Op-Ed: Platner Was Forced Out—So Why Has Deaton Escaped Scrutiny?
Oct 22, 2026by wmasspiin Uncategorized
by Matt Chilliak

Deaton
A lack of balance? (created via Google image search, Wikipedia and WMP&I images)

There should be a simple standard for politicians’ bad behavior: sexual misconduct allegations deserve serious scrutiny. We rely on news media and reporters to shine a light on legitimate allegations so that the voting public can make an informed decision.

But apparently, that scrutiny has limits—or at least a double standard.

Take, Graham Platner. In July, sexual assault allegations the press reported pressured him to step down as the Democratic nominee for US Senate in Maine. He denied the accusation, but for Democrats, it was the last straw for a candidate who for months was repeatedly making national headlines for bad behavior.

And rightfully so—the fourth estate serves as an important watchdog to inform the public about those who hold and seek higher office. That includes scrutiny of their past and present character Ultimately, Platner was out, and a new nomination process replaced him.

Contrast that to John Deaton, the Massachusetts Republican nominee for Senate.

Like Platner, Deaton’s path to politics was unconventional. And like Platner, his story includes an incident of sexual impropriety. However, in Deaton’s case, there’s no question. He wrote about it himself.

In his 2023 self-published memoir, Deaton details several transgressions: small-time drug dealing, a shootout and possible homicide, drunk driving, filing a false police report while serving as a Marine JAG officer, and, perhaps most notably, that as an adult he approached a 15-year-old girl, began a sexual relationship, and had her move in with him as she completed high school.

Of the relationship, Deaton wrote: “I made the inherent mistake of thinking, because she was young, I could mold her into the perfect partner.”

Why would Deaton include this in his memoir just months before …

BREAKING: An Eagles team source has revealed that Philadelphia threatened quarterback Jalen Hurts with significant disciplinary action if he refused to play in London amid serious concerns surrounding blood clots in his calf.

Despite concerns that a blood clot may have moved from its original location, Eagles team doctors cleared Hurts to play, prompting the organization to take a firm stance on his availability.

Hurts was informed that refusing to take the field after receiving medical clearance could be considered a breach of contract, potentially resulting in the forfeiture of his entire game salary, substantial fines, and even a suspension.

Dan's wife Carolyn: www.reddit.com/r/raisedbybo... [alt-text continued in next skeet]
And this comment from "Dan's" wife:

Stumbled upon this thread and THANK GOD. I am “Dans" wife. This book is, sadly for my MIL, fiction, or her twisted view she's come to believe. Thanks to all who have our backs. It can be a lonely road when you feel your entire in law family have ill feelings towards you and their own son..certain family members even referred to me as a succubus bitch, had to Google that one lol..bet thats not in the book. We've tried to fix things multiple times but some people can't move forward for some reason. It was sad to read this book and I honestly felt like we were made to be the villain. I've read so many mean comments about how I must be controlling or want him all to myself, quite the contrary. I'm here to tell you all that I encourage my husband to have a relationship with his family despite their feelings for me; however, my MIL demands some kind of justice that, I feel, can never be fulfilled....and NO ONE WAS UNINVITED TO THE WEDDING and trust me when I say their presence and everyone in their family was greatly missed (we still had an amazing time ;). If anyone knows “Dan” (this feels so dumb) then you know he's kind, loyal and will always love his family. So, we press on and have built a wonderful happy family together and have MANY successful relationships with friends and family. I've toyed with writing our tell all but... I don't want anymore hurt and don't need that kind of negativity in our life. At the end of the day I feel this comes down to my mother in law's pride and feelings of losing control on a situation she could, for once, not control. If this book would have helped her heal then bravo, but by the vicious call he received the other night says otherwise. In the end it's sad that they've estranged us.. we've called, sent emails..heck even my parents tried to reach out to them before the wedding. [...]

Sheri has been at this for *years*. www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/es... The comments are gone, so I'll link to one from a Reddit thread about this article, quoting one of the Yahoo! comments: www.reddit.com/r/LetterstoJ...

Here’s one of the comments from the article:

I personally know Dan McGregor. His Mom (Sheri) is a nut job trying to sell books. She is a so called "life coach". People, there is way more to this than this version that you see here. She is super manipulative and toxic. Dan tried several times to make this right. She is the one who said she wasn't coming to the wedding. She is the one who was rude to the inlaws. She is the one who got Dan's siblings not to come. She didn't like being compared to the other family so it was basically "you hurt me - I am not going to your wedding" and then she wanted Dan to beg her to come which he didn't want to be manipulated in to. This was Dan's big day and his entire family pulled out because her feelings were hurt. Don't buy into this manipulative garbage...

Do we really need modern languages in a world whose common tongue is English, and in which interpretation software is close to flawless? Should French and German not be treated like Latin or Sanskrit, subjects of interest to specialists rather than supposedly general skills? Memorising maths formulae, too, is largely obsolete. So are handwriting, coding and chunks of geography. Again, you will doubtless have your own list, but something has to give, and the test should be the future needs of students rather than the present skills of teachers.
As machines become better at producing answers, human beings need to become better at intelligent interrogation, applied logic, the identification of fallacies and the exercise of sound judgement. Instead of aiming to outperform machines, we must learn to use them more shrewdly.

The only "principles" you have are the ones you are willing to defend even when it means your side is losing the fight. If you only argue "principles" in support of your own side, all you really support is "sides".

Here, Masnick defends principle.

Why does this remind me of...
Black-and-white photo of the 1973 assassination of Spain’s Francoist PM Luis Carrero Blanco in Madrid. A bomb that had been placed under the road he would later drive down blew his car so far into the air that it flew over a 5-story building and landed in its backyard. This earned him the nickname of “Spain's first astronaut.”

During the night, no mice or rats can escape the super-sensitive ears and infra-red eyes of your roving robot cat. Back in 1956 scientists experimented with the first robot animals, such as the robot mole that could follow light beams, the robot moth dancing around flames and robot mice finding their way out of mazes.

Fanciful, this picture of the near future? A foretaste of such robot wonders

[black-and-white photo of two white men in fedora and suits carrying a box. To their right, further for grounded, is a shiny anthropoid robot. The caption reads, “Metal star of Zombies Of The Stratosphere heeds his masters in science-fiction movie.”]

Alt-text continued
In your robot car you simply set a dial for your destination and relax. Your automatic auto does the rest-following a radar beam downtown, passing other cars, slowing down in speed zones, gently applying radar brakes when necessary, even gassing up when your tank is empty. You give a friendly wave to robot traffic cops who break up all traffic jams with electronic speed and perception. Suddenly you hear gun shots. A thief is emptying his gun at a robot cop, who just keeps coming, bullets bouncing from his steel chest. The panicky thug races away in his car but the robot cop shifts himself into eighth gear and overtakes the bandit's car on foot.

If you work at an office, your robot secretary takes dictation on voice tapes and types internally at the same time, handing you your letter as soon as you say "yours truly." If you go golfing, the secretary answers the phone, records any messages, and also delivers any pre-recorded message of yours.

At home, your robot reciter reads books to you from your microfilm library. His eye can see microscopic prints. Or you play chess with a robot companion, matching your wits against an electronic brain.

In 1956 research scientists already devised robot game players who always won against human opponents. Of course the 1965 robots can be adjusted as you wish by buttons for high, average or low skill.

When a heavy snow falls you don't have to shovel the walk. Neither does your robot caretaker. He merely sprays cheap atomic heat around the grounds, melting the snow as fast as it falls. Yours is a robot home, too, turning all day on a foundation turntable to enjoy the utmost benefits of the sun.

At bedtime, you snap on the robot guard who detects any burglars electronically. It's a cheaper version of the robot alarm system in 1956, guarding precious documents like the original Constitution, in the National Archives Building.

[teaser text]
The robots are coming! When they do, you'll command a host of push-button servants.

You'll Own "Slaves” by 1965
By O. O. Binder

Robots will dress you, comb your hair and serve meals in a jiffy.

IN 1863, Abe Lincoln freed the slaves. But by 1965, slavery will be back! We'll all have personal slaves again, only this time we won't fight a Civil War over them. Slavery will be here to stay.

Don't be alarmed. We mean robot "slaves." Let's take a peek into the future to see what the Robot Age will bring. It is a morning of 1965…

[Black-and-white illustration of a robot dressing a white man, who stands passively as the robot puts his jacket on over his shirt and trousers for him. A smaller robot at bottom right of the illo is holding two trays, one with breakfast laid out on it, the other with a coffee pot and small skillet. On the rear wall to the right of an abstract artwork is an electronic checklist. “Valet robot” and “breakfast” are checked off, while “dinner,” “jet car,” and “commuter helicopter” are not. On the adjoining wall is some kind of giant ray-gun in a recess in the wall, with more electronic buttons next to it, these labeled with numbers.]

You are gently awakened by soft chimes from your robot clock, which also turns up the heat, switches on radio news and signals your robot valet, whom you've affectionately named "Jingles." He turns on your shower, dries you with a blast of warm air, and runs an electric shaver over your stubble. Jingles helps you dress, tying your necktie perfectly and parting your hair within a millimeter of where you like it.

Down in the kitchen, Steela, the robot cook, opens a door in her own alloy body and withdraws eggs, toast and coffee from her built-in stove. Then she dumps the dishes back in and you hear her internal dishwasher bubbling as you leave for the garage.

TW racism, colonialism
The site was first excavated in the late 19th century and quickly looted by British colonists for its ivory, metal and gold artifacts. These colonists insisted that Africans hadn't built Great Zimbabwe, instead claiming it arose from the Phoenicians, a people originally from the Mediterranean; they used that inaccuracy to justify taking all the artifacts to England, according to the documentary. Today, many Great Zimbabwean artifacts are held in the collection of the Pitt Rivers Museum at the University of Oxford.

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council, the other major global certification body, announced in 2024 that it would withdraw from China. Richard Wexler, who leads the National Coalition for Child Protection Reform, said that child protective services agencies often give adoptive families the benefit of the doubt. “Whenever a child welfare agency investigates abuse in foster care or in an adoptive home it is, in effect, investigating itself—because they put the child there in the first place,” he said. “That creates an enormous incentive to see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil and write no evil in the casefile.”

Reposting with alt-text. 🎻 for these frauds.
At the same time, the clinician-patient relationship was described as fragile and vulnerable to multiple sources of strain. Ongoing controversies surrounding CFS and anticipated or experienced criticism from patients, families, patient organisations, colleagues, and health authorities could challenge clinicians' confidence and sense of legitimacy:

"If I'm met with messages like 'Recovery isn't possible' or 'The ME association says this, so you don't know what you're talking about,' we're dealing with conflicting views. That can make me feel insecure as a clinician and hesitant about being questioned or criticised. When trust is missing, it becomes much harder to offer patients the safety and hope they need."

HCPs described how such tensions could undermine their ability to communicate confidence and provide clear guidance. ***Some also expressed residual diagnostic uncertainty and concern about how current approaches might be viewed if future research were to establish a treatable biological dysfunction with little or no role for the processes they currently targeted. Several clinicians also reported being criticised for not believing patients or for minimising their suffering, highlighting the moral and professional stakes involved.***

Sustaining a collaborative and trusting relationship was therefore experienced as a delicate balancing act: being sufficiently challenging to support change while avoiding loss of trust or credibility. Many addressed conflicting information and external influences explicitly in treatment, for example by discussing competing messages, recommending recovery narratives, or guiding patients towards alternative sources of support. Some also advised caution regarding certain patient organisations.

Continued. Tl;dr the reviewer wishes it was a completely different movie.
It's two men, masculine, white, tough, cowboys, literal goddamned cowboys, whose identities are not (noticeably) wrapped up in their sexualities. And sure, people like this probably exist, but one of the worst parts of the closet was not being able to be *who I am*yzeee. And so, I can't relate to these guys. But, you ask, wasn't the point that they couldn't be who they were? And the answer is, no. The point was to make them as blandly straight as possible for mainstream Hollywood audiences so they might remotely identify with them somehow despite their (denied) queerness. The idea that they couldn't be who they really were is belied both by history and the fact that the bulk of their relationship takes place in the middle of nowhere. The point of their escapes into the wilderness was that they could be who they were--we could see their boyish play together especially in the beginning. So the least we deserved from this movie was a moment where their queerness was addressed frankly, directly, unavoidably, without all of the macho cowboy bullshit. Instead, we got Marlboro Man but he fucks other dudes.

Oh, look, gay misery.

I can't relate to this at all. This is a film about the closet, but the two closeted queer men never vocally admit their queerness. They never admit who they are at all, except in the strict sense that they, you know, fuck each other. They never say they love each other. They never say the word "gay." One might argue the power of their performances says it all, but... what I saw was bad dialogue and mumbling and a complete lack of chemistry? So I don't know what fucking movie you watched, but this wasn't even good as Oscar bait.

I can't imagine why this charmer couldn't find a wife. TW misogyny
He stipulated that the lady should be an 18 to 23-year-old religious Saudi from a tribal background, wear a face-covering niqab, agree not to work outside the home, and be willing to live abroad. He had no success using an online matchmaking platform for Muslims, he said, but had become convinced that most women “care primarily about money” and were “skilled at pretence”.

His posts regularly evoked violence against women and used derogatory sexual slurs.

“Her only obligation is to lift her legs,” he wrote. Discussing a woman seeking a divorce over a dispute about posting pictures online, he said: “she needs a good thrashing”.

Also, this was just a few months ago (TW SA also) www.cornellsun.com/article/2026...
Paduch was sentenced to life in prison in November 2024 for his yearslong sexual abuse of more than 50 male patients, including six minors, from at least 2009 to 2019 under the guise of medical care. He was sentenced after being convicted on six counts of inducing a person to travel to engage in unlawful sexual activity and five counts of inducing a minor to engage in unlawful sexual activity.

This is such a welcome righteous corrective to that horrific apologia from the other day. This screencap isn't even the most important part of the essay, but it's something that so many people need to read. The vigor with which people will defend their parasocial faves is freakish. [1/2]
First, we have to establish who “we” is. One of the strongest things surrounding this whole revelation is people who watched Geller’s videos claiming they had been “betrayed” or wronged in some way. Let me be clear: you are not a victim of what Geller did. You watched a YouTube video (or several) and believed in a public persona of goodness crafted by a man who has none. This is not about you, and framing it that way is disturbing. You should consider why you need this to be about you. You may have your own personal response to Geller and his work, but there is no “we.” There is just each of us, and how we deal with it ourselves.
