The powerful tend not to be explicitly opposed to democracy. Instead, the task is to manage things so that elections produce the right outcomes and don't change anything that matters. One of the main ways to do this is to make sure that the people hear and see only the right things, so that when they go to the polls they can be trusted to tick the right boxes and go back to sleep for another four or five years. And this in turn requires that the right people maintain control of the means of mental production. This goes well beyond Kraft, or what he decides to do with his stadium. Most British newspapers are owned by a handful of billionaires, yet nobody asks if it's right for billionaires to be taking positions on complicated political issues.

Not downplaying the atrocious service suffered by the passengers in the parent thread but who tf is not doing this?? Never get on a plane without everything you most need for 24 hours after landing.

In case you wondered how the old Severn Bridge viewpoint is looking at the former Aust services sixty years on, the answer is: somewhat neglected. @motorwayservices.uk

The Roadie is a very important feature of the working band. It is his job to hump the gear, mix the sound, and make funny smells in the van on long journeys. Really big touring bands have a man for each of these jobs, but they all still make funny smells in the van on long journeys.

Ah yeah, here we are: youngvulgarian.substack.com/p/out-of-the...
By the end of the game - which Georgia was winning, by the way - there were few of us left. Because it was clear that the outcome of the game wasn't going to change in the last ten minutes, the hosts decided to just change the channel and go about their evening. I was gobsmacked and, due to being lightly drunk, threw a very small tantrum. As a result, someone had to get the game up on their smartphone then hand me the phone so I could watch the rest of play in a corner, like a toddler.

"Do not be 'aving it like zis wiz your poo-ey supermarket ingredients, English pigdogs!" ...Yeah, fuck off, Henry, we don't all live near a fishmonger or a French groceries shop.
Choose your smoked haddock carefully: you want large, thick fillets of undyed fish. Stating the obvious, here, but a good fishmonger will have this; a supermarket never. The creme fraiche must be a French, naturally soured cream, too, becausethe cheaper English versions coagulate when heat is applied, resulting in an unpleasant, watery gunk.

Apparently we can fix all the issues with AI by simply embracing it: 1. Use AI 2. ??? 3. ETHICS!
Ignoring AI won't stop its impact

The environmental, ethical and
social impact of AI is significant
and growing. In a recent session for an environmental charity, one
director was torn between the
ability to do more as an organisation and the moral costs of doing so, such as the carbon impact of running AI systems. But AI is not going away. It's far better to have AI-literate citizens, able to demand that it's built in a responsible and democratic way. AI is not a train waiting for us to board; it's already mid-journey. The only question is who gets to steer.

PSA: Fans of mince pie alternatives, go for Aldi over Lidl. The Aldi Caramelised Apple Crumble ones aren't as good as previous years (why add caramel??) and there are only 4 in a pack this year (chiz), but the Lidl versions are anaemic and flavourless by comparison, despite a bigger pack. #xmasfood

This bit sounds extremely 🤔, like which dodgy religion-affiliated org funded this research?
Researchers from Britain and Austria, led by Miles Richardson, professor of nature connectedness at the University of Derby, found the strongest indicator for a close relationship with nature was high levels of "spirituality" in a society. More religious societies and cultures where there was a preference for faith over science showed high levels of nature connection.
