Why AI is exposing design’s craft crisis. Sometimes you read something that feels like a punch in the guts, yet, you keep nodding. Here we are. This: “We told ourselves AI would level the playing field.

Why AI is exposing design’s craft crisis
AI didn’t create the craft crisis in design — it exposed the technical literacy gap that’s been eroding strategic influence for over a decade.

And you have to know six months in advance on which week your developer will be done so they can be assigned by their manager to another project. Sure there are some tools for managing variation, but they are seen as bad and you shouldnt be using them, you should plan better.

I genuinely work in a waterfall org, a place that somehow got missed by all this agile thing, and it's worse than agile critics make it to be. There is no room for rework - what you defined in your requirements is what you ship. Also no partial shippings only the full project. 1/2

> compliant /non-compliant I swear, everyone running anything, management, government etc can only think in terms of red-green. On days like these I always wonder how is it that anything somehow still works and does not fall apart...

Where i work _everything_ is done with tickets. My favorite is when i need to download a word form from the QMS for new users or an RFC, fill it out, print it so a manager can sign it, and then attach it to a service now ticket.

Developer tickets? I just make a user story and send a service now ticket...

It's not even that. Even if they use language, they are not using it in the way we humans do. It's a lot more like an optimization algorithm. It will find a way through if one exists, but its not like a conscious directed action

Ok this is weird. I _dreamt_ there was a new episode just this night. I've never had dreams about podcasts before.

But what if we did things better and made a special team that will get the stakeholders to commit to the projects. That will surely work? Right?

Unfortunately the half a minute is usually more for comfort and the actual accuracy is a bit more. I've timed the Copenhagen metro. Sometimes a minute is three, sometimes half a minute is one, but it's _roughly_ accurate and there are funding implications for transportation companies tied to it

I think I just had a lightbulb moment. In companies used to project management, a sprint is not, well a sprint, but just a word that replaces a period of time. For example "a month". So we don't do X in month5, we do X in sprint 10...

Problem is almost all places, especially traditional enterprises, cannot even comprehend the idea. The thought of not "utilizing your resources" is anathema

Yes, but have you considered that we have planned the deliverables for the next six months and management expects to see ROI already after five.

Melinoënomics - the true measure of value is souls in the underworld. The means of production are actual witchcraft. For some reason the titan of Time features as a variable in a lot of models

It's amazing how managers are so bad all over the board on arguably what's one of their most important tasks. And that things are still running despite it

I think it's broader than the liminal shows - in games and books with dead or dying, desolate and lonely world, with no hope and eternal decay. And things beingmote and more absurd. Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Locked Tomb, etc. etc. Like the flip side of the escapism of romantasy ...

In manufacturing, especially medical, I've seen people, especially managers that not only don't know better is possible they straight up refuse to believe it.

IMO the priesthood is also a minority, but it's the one in control. The vast majority is the armies of corporate developers that only care about getting through the days tasks and dealing with their asshole PM

Even when the technology might work, it's done as a corporate rollout that ends up in something half-cooked, forgotten in a corporate attic. Cause nobody bothered to see what the real needs are and how people feel about it. It happens all the time with rollouts of a lot more useful systems

Oh, they do. At least before approving projects. It's usually something along the lines - "We have X work that uses Y FTEs, with AI we will use Y/10 FTEs". And then after the demo the project ject gets stretched longer and longer. The decision makers have no clue if its actually realistic and doable

As a bit of a cybernetics head, I also think a decent chunk on why companies mostly manage the company is pure ignorance or incompetence on how to work with systems of this size. MBA and it's consequences. Of course also politics, power structures and all the stuff in your analysis too...

That type of user stories kind of makes sense tho - in not so product-savvy companies you need to make a database for some stupid reason and you got a scrum master pestering you that you need a user story for it. There are no customers
