So true. My parents don’t know because they don’t care to. They were bewildered when I moved away from my bloodthirsty home state. Once the propaganda kicked into high gear, I had friends who were chill when I first came out start threatening me if they saw me go to the women’s bathroom.

I haven’t heard any politician, even the “good ones”, say a single thing about getting us back the rights we’ve lost under Trump’s EOs, like passports. I fear that, by 2028, the electorate’s goldfish-caliber collective memory will view calls to undo these as us demanding new rights we never had.

I hear people call this “purity politics”. That’s insultingly reductive. This is a highly regrettable strategy called defense-in-depth. For us, keeping transphobia contained on one end of the Overton window is essential to a long term future where we can get healthcare and work and live.

It’s worth noting that, while we are imploring democrats to not openly attack trans people, even those candidates still considered allies are not campaigning on any promise to roll back the restrictions that Republican rule has already imposed on us. Good for Hungary. Something to aspire to.

Here’s the problem: trans people in the US have fewer rights than we did 10 years ago. Every “compromise” we’ve made (puberty blockers instead of HRT starting at onset of puberty, needing multiple notes from drs to start HRT, etc) have been taken by liberals as the starting point to compromise from.

It’s one thing to permit the “trans panic” defense. Most states, unfortunately, do. It’s another thing to actively promote/encourage its use, like Tennessee’s appellate court. I’ll just add this to the mountain of reasons I won’t go home.
