does anyone recognize what shark this is? (if it is one??) I found a Vancouver Aquarium species list that says the only sharks are blacktip, epaulette, and bamboo, but the blacktips are in a different tank and this looks too big to be epaulette or bamboo

Why does man print "gimme gimme gimme" at 00:30?
Asked 8 years, 9 months ago
Modified 11 months ago
Viewed 574k times

We've noticed that some of our automatic tests fail when they run at 00:30 but work fine the rest of the day. They fail with the message

gimme gimme gimme

in stderr, which wasn't expected. Why are we getting this output?> Dear @colmmacuait, I think that if you type "man" at 0001 hours it should print "gimme gimme gimme". #abba @marnanel - 3 November 2011

er, that was my fault, I suggested it. Sorry.

Pretty much the whole story is in the commit. The maintainer of man is a good friend of mine, and one day six years ago I jokingly said to him that if you invoke man after midnight it should print "gimme gimme gimme", because of the Abba song called "Gimme gimme gimme a man after midnight":

Well, he did actually put it in. A few people were amused to discover it, and we mostly forgot about it until today.

meanwhile, how the treasurer over at the ACM talks about students:
We tried to set student registration at cost after experiencing most of our losses due to more students coming, with each new student costing us in food and other expenses, which have gone up significantly due to inflation.

I lived right next to a Green Line stop in Boston and I wrote down the vehicle numbers of every car I rode from 12 June to 30 July. Here's some charts illustrating the proportions of what I rode by vehicle type + the proportions of the existing total fleet for comparison #MBTA #GreenLine
Green Line LRV existing fleet vs. what I rode on
LRV7 (Kinki): 20 out of 120
LRV8 (Breda): 21 out of 95
LRV9 (CAF): 5 out of 24Green Line LRV types I personally rode on (unique cars)
LRV7 (Kinki): 43.5%
LRV8 (Breda): 45.7%
LRV9 (CAF) 10.9%Green line LRV type proportion of total fleet
LRV7 (Kinki) #3600 – #3719: 50.2%
LRV8 (Breda) #3800 – #3894: 39.7%
LRV9 (CAF): #3900 – #3923: 10.0%

here's another stitch of three offset double exposures, I think once I get my negatives I can rescan the whole strip myself and fill in the gaps (I wonder how long photos show up on bsky's new carousel layout...)
left: a stool sliced in half and rotated about a bar in the middle, laying on the sidewalk
middle: vita gelato shop front window with people
right: a pigeon hanging out near the yellow warning line of a subway stop

new roll! it didn't latch onto the sprocket holes properly so my first few exposures are partially doubly exposed. I have two slightly different shots of the same thing but one of them was split across two frames so I tried to stitch them together and put a strip of the second one in the gap
photo of narrow yellow door but the top part of it is a light-leaked magenta colour, the bottom part is a light-leaked red colour, and a small strip in the middle is normal and has no light leakage

start doing computer science <3
START DOING COMPUTER SCIENCE

* VARIABLES WERE SUPPOSED TO BE GIVEN NAMES
* YEARS OF PROGRAMMING yet STILL MORE TO CREATE
* Don't want to write code anyway? We have a field for you: It's called THEORY
* "Well typed programs don't go wrong." "Boolean satisfiability is NP-complete." "Every effectively calculable function is computable." — Statements dreamed up by the utterly inspired

LOOK at what computer scientists deserve your Respect for all this time, with all the circuits and computers we built for them
(This is REAL computer science, done by REAL computer scientists):
