I created #sendcutsend parts so that you can rack and stack consumer grade hardware ( #MiniPC, #raspberypi, etc). I have open sourced them at codeberg.org/invirtuate/m... I put some blog posts together also: invirtuate.com/blog#_mountlet #Technology #Minnesota #selfhosted #homelab

Had to add a hack to fix a connection leak with a service somewhere (I dont know where it is... yet). How I feel about the interim hack is picrel

I was able to finally automate #freebsd in my #homelab . Not as easy to provision images as #arch #debian or #ubuntu but it may be more rewarding?

It took me 3hrs to move one of my hypervisors to #debian . Most of this time was spent backing up the volumes and restoring them. The nice thing is, the setup of guestlet was quick, easy and (appears to be) bug free moving between distros. #selfhosted #homelab

You really should be using token bucket for rate limiting on your API or web app. #golang #backend #webapp

@fancifulrealities.com site has had a burst in traffic the past 24hrs. Decided to do a go pprof CPU profile because I was curious where the webapp spent all its compute cycles. Did not expect it to be in metrics collection and reporting. #golang #technology #web #selfhosting

As an #indiedev this is my #jira epic + issues :) I dont care if you dont like it, it's engineering in its purest form: problem + solution Yes I track in version control, etc. Is it crazy? Probably, but jira is crazier.

When you collect #metrics and have #observability for your data, patterns become more obvious.

I auto-patch my hypervisor nodes in my #homelab nightly (they do reboots if necessary). No warning occurs, they simply patch, gracefully shutdown all VMs, then reboot. My biggest indicator of patching are picrel. Crazy? Nah, this is how I pursue perfection. #selfhosted #ubuntu #technology

I mostly wrapped up my #rbac implementation today. After reading through the #owasp recommendations for building rbac I can proudly say that the implementation is about what, 10 LOC? You be the judge, I cant count. What you don't see is the map that is 500+ LOC that makes it all work. #golang

I also decided to do TCP connect times (yes I know DNS is UDP < 512 bytes). Past 3 hours of TCP connect times are below. You could extrapolate that #quad9 DNS resolvers are one resolver (same system, different IPs). But it's pretty obvious that #google DNS is separate.

What do you mean by "puts 8.8.8.8 first?". All these resolvers get pinged individually in their own concurrent process. I decided to test them all individually starting yesterday, here is the past 3 hours of data. As you can see #quad9 is still superior to #google and #cloudflare.

I switched to #quad9 from #cloudflare the other day. My completely and scientific assessment of performance can be seen in picrel. quad9 (orange) responds in ~10ms, cloudflare in ~19ms (green), #google in ~22ms (blue). Yellow is my upstream ISP (3-5ms). If you care about milliseconds use quad9?

Over the weekend, I added ACLs to the API for guestlet. If there are no ACLs it's default deny. It also supports explicit deny/allow by CIDR. Auth can be validated in about ~20ms. ACL modification and auth to the API is also logged to the account. #homelab #selfhosted #technology #cybersecurity

I estimated that the refactor I was working on would delete ~20k LOC, looks like I was wrong, 30k LOC deleted. Context: I had duplicate code that was doing same thing for 6 similar but different services. So, I refactored under a single unified API. #golang #coding #technology #tech #programming
