There's one in Seattle's Pike Place Market of a pig (really a piggy bank) whose nose is rubbed for good luck.

Halloween is finally on a Saturday - so why is everyone having parties on the Saturday BEFORE? (And when I'm out of town) Is it to not clash with the Trick-or-Treaters?

It didn't bother me at all or stand out. Later I thought about it and wondered if she didn't have parents or teachers read books to her when she was little. Both my parents and my teachers read YA novels to us all through elementary school. Either that or she expected audiobooks to be radio plays

A friend in my bookclub decided to try the audiobook version for once. I usually opt for audiobooks. She found it annoying because it included the audio narrator saying the words "she said" and "he said" after a sentence and how could I stand it? I asked her if she reads that part in printed books

Wow. The man who never heard anything when a woman spoke (out of a department that was 80% women) just Peter Prinicple'd his way to SENIOR vice president. I saw the announcement right after I got done applying for unemployment benefits.

I REALLY like this @anildash.com piece on 'unalive' and algospeak in general, particularly the exploration of the implications for a generation of people growing up steeped in it.

I think it's a generic box for anything and probably should be read in an excited voice. "Hooray, your package is here!" However, when it's here because I have to return my laptop after being laid off, I hear it in a gruff voice of a command. (Might also be the periods)

Watched a football game today (Oregon Ducks) where where the opposing team purposely injured their star. Then watched a rugby league game (Penrith Panthers) where the opposing team went after their star & broke his leg. Guys, I think sports might be dangerous

Had our last team meeting today. I thought maybe they would say something nice or at least a goodbye to the 3 of us being laid off. We trained most of this team. But nothing. I don't know if they're saving it up for something else or if they're doing a "sweep it under the rug" move.

I had one young manager say something about my "exit interview." No, people getting laid off don't get one. Can you imagine? "So now that we've suddenly fired you because we don't like the law in your state that makes sure you have a liveable wage, what do you think of us & your time here?"

Juliet🦇 @inventingwords.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
People at work, like lower management, keep wanting to do nice "good-bye" things for us few being laid off. Things we normally do for people leaving the company. I keep having to point out: others who left were leaving for a new job. We're just being fired. Not exactly a fond farewell.

In the late 1990s, I worked for an internet filtering service. We weren't censoring everything. Offices could chose what they wanted to block from their employees (gambling, chat rooms, sports) which meant we had to put a label on all websites. And what is the internet mostly full of?

Surfing the internet for porn. I'm proud to often be the cause of managers regretting asking this question as a team ice breaker.

I thought I was laid off because I had been there for over 10 years. Finding out who else is getting the ax, it looks like anyone in WA who worked for them for over 5 years.

This is pretty fucking wild. I had assumed in a worst case scenario he would target blue zip codes and toss ballots based on technicalities but this is even worse than I imagined.
Not only is this system astonishingly untested, USPS has simultaneously implemented an
impracticable zero percent failure rate.
13 When ballots are submitted to USPS in large-volume
batches, if any one ballot in the batch cannot be verified against the Portal, all ballots in that
batch will be rejected. For example, if a state election official brings a batch of 10,000 ballots to
USPS and USPS is unable to match just one of those ballots against the Portal – because, for
example, someone has recently changed their name after marriage or they’ve moved – then
USPS would refuse to mail the remaining 9,999 ballots as well. As the whistleblower notes,

I do know that the last few years I didn't receive a merit-based raise because the percentage of the raise in WA pay was higher so they considered THAT my raise.

I was just told I have one month left with the company I work for. The reason I'm being laid off is that they can't afford what Washington state requires for pay. It has nothing to do with my performance. I'm salary & have been there 15 yrs. Not sure how WA laws for minimum wage play into that

Best way to use purpleair.com map: click on the gear icon at upper left and choose "US EPA" in the "Apply Conversion" setting, or else readings will be too high. Also uncheck the box "show inside" to avoid seeing monitors located indoors, which have a black circle around the colored dot on the map.
