As quantum computers scale up by orders of magnitude, so do their refrigeration requirements. But scaling dilution refrigerators requires scaling helium-3 supply—and Earth’s supply of helium-3 is extremely limited.

Here’s the science behind why supercomputing quantum computers run cold: Superconducting quantum computers must be kept at near absolute zero temperatures to function effectively. That’s not “nice to have” cold…that’s physics-level, colder-than-outer-space type cold (<10 millikelvin).

Last week, we learned that NASA selected the Astrolab team, which includes Interlune, to deliver its Crewed Lunar Vehicle (CLV-1) rover. Veteran space industry operator Christie Iacomini is on board as the Interlune program manager, and we’ve opened new roles to round out this team.
