👁️ 'Unravelling our Anthropocentric Gaze' by Stevie Berneray. In Issue 1 Volume 2 of 'Origins', Stevie shares their reflections on how the language we use perpetuates a human-centred lens. Read more on our website, link in bio!
A dark blue washed background with an illustration of an eye in the middle. Above it, there is a white box that looks like a piece of paper, containing text.

Text: Unravelling our anthropocentric gaze by Stevie BernerayText: Language can therefore forge an anthropocentric gaze, a lens which is human-centric, governed by human supremacism, and places the human as the ‘origin of all knowing’ (Hultman and Hillevi 2010, 525). Bennett shares this linguistic barrier in trying to write the language of shared materiality by saying ‘It seems necessary and impossible to rewrite the default grammar of agency, a grammar that assigns activity to people and passivity to things.
