My plan to wall 59(ish) miles by the ebd of October has been a success! My next challenge is turning that into 500 miles by next September. Thankfully, @pecunium.bsky.social is doing the same challenge, so there is a bit of friendly rivalry going on.
A pretty finisher certificate saying that I successfully walked 58.6 miles between Sept 12 and Oct 9. It says Claude Monet next to Monet art presented on a lilac background.

So, I know my newest craft is inkle weaving, BUT, you see, there was this video on Instagram about sewing leaves so now I have leaves sitting in a bowl in my kitchen in vegetable glycerine...
Autumn leaves in a square bowl with a clear liquid, all covered with clingfilm.

I experimented and now have an informed opinion. Even walking it, a marathon over the course of a week is *much* more enjoyable for me than doing the whole thing in one go. Next challenge for me is 59 miles by the end of October, then 500 miles by next September (overlapping, already started).
Finishing certificate: Conqueror: Race Across Middle-Earth. Shows I did the 42 kilometers between 28th Sept and 3rd Oct 2026.

You're very nice to say so! I was pulling tight after beating, but I think it's going to take some practice for me for that final tug to be consistent. I was trying for as tight as possible in some places, so now I at least know that I want to go for less tension than that!

I am attempting to learn band weaving on an Inklette loom. First attempt: my tension is *wildly* inconsistent.
A small wooden Inklette loom with a nearly finished woven band in yellow and green, with a purple stripe up the middle and black stripes up the sides. The width varies quite a bit. There are soft toys in the background and this picture has obviously been taken on a bed.

True. In context, I had a conversation in my teens/early 20s (I remember who with but not exactly when) about things like hairstyle/glasses/new clothes. I was convinced by that conversation that everyone wins if you bounce into a room going "look, shiny!" rather than it being some kind of test.

And WorldCon is done. I am particularly happy about my Artist! ribbon, and the one I was handed by a random person for masking ( <3 The mask hides my fangs <3 ). Now to deal with post-con malaise. I enjoyed wearing my nice clothes and getting lots of compliments. So many lovely folks.
A worldcon badge with two blinkies (Flying Purple People Eater and LA Con V logo) and a yellow Hall Costume Award badge attached to the lanyard. There are also 9 ribbons.
1) Blue with silver writing "Sharing Songs, Connecting Worlds" for Interfilk.org
2) White with black writing "Dublin 2029" small text "Our Crossroads lit by stories and stars", supporting the Dublin bid to host in 2029.
3) Maroon with shiny "Shake-Hands FAN" which I was handed when tipsy and it was pretty colours, but I haven't managed to work out what it means yet...
4) Green with white "Solarpunk" from playing an interesting Solarpunk RP.
5) White with mixed shiny writing "Ask ne about utopia!" from the same game as 4.
6) Black with red writing "The mask hides my fangs" which I was handed by someone for masking and pleases me greatly.
7) Green with silver "Artist!" which I got because I had art in the art show and showed up to the artists reception.
8) Yellow with blue "My First Blinkie" which I got for soldering a blinking badge together (as you see I ended up doing two). I hadn't soldered in years but apparently am still capable of fairly neat work.
9) Light blue with dark blue "Maker" from the same source as 8.

Is there a way to read QC that will keep track of where I'm up to for me? (E.g. Like Tapas for Side Quested.) Last time I did a read-through-and-catch-up it caused an RSI issue! I'd like to do one again, then maybe actually keep up, without losing my place every time my computer or phone restarts.

Messing around with wire, then drawings based on that, aiming to design something better. There will be many more rounds of thinking and several more actual makes before I get something that I'm happy with. Would help if I could find my jewellery anvil.
Messy drawings in pink and orange, similar to the copper and beads piece to the right, but the drawings are more complex. Looks a bit like a tentacle (which is what it is supposed to be), but maybe a bit more like an excessively tall wizards hat... Copper piece is wrapped wire and two mm faceted glass beads in green for the main part, with two types of blue beads at the bottom.

There are several things wrong with this bit of weaving / kumihimo. One is that I don't think the colours go together as well as I thought they did before I started. Another is that it isn't art for the @laworldcon.bsky.social art show...
A zig-zag kumihimo braid still on the (square) disk, with bobbins of the thread. It's waxed threads in yellow, orange, and dark red. It really needed a bright red instead. Oh well...

Some doodles for today. The calligraphy earlier this week has re-awoken my desire to art. The book these are in is tiny - fewer delayed gratification issues!
Four square doodles, line spacing and curve used for aesthetic interest. Black pen on white(-ish) paper.

Took a calligraphy intro class today. The teacher was lovely and it was interesting. However, let us just say that calligraphy is still on my list of things to learn...
Four sections, each with a different picture. Top: two sheets of calligraphy done with different nibs. Middle left: two nibs, one on a 'pen', lying on a practice sheet. Middle right: setup on tables when we arrived - lots of bits of card. Bottom: Calligraphy on a chalkboard, with instagram tags.

My previous review was premature. I found myself pulled back to this book, despite deciding to give up several times. Yes, it needs a good editing pass or two (which I'd be happy to help with). It's also engaging, with some characters I like enough that I really want to see what happens to them.

The main problem with things like this is not the "wrong" thing itself. That's minor. It's that now I'm primed to notice *other* minor things, and it all adds up to me enjoying the book less. (E.g. "The England skies" instead of England's skies or The English skies.) Tiny issues, all in a heap.

3 of 3 Implying she always wears an entirely unnecessary lab coat... She goes to therapy after work on Friday. Probably still wearing the labcoat. It is not mentioned. I will keep reading for a bit longer, maybe there will be a reason soon? Other than that the author has never met a scientist?

SK @intemporaliter.bsky.social · 08/07/2026
2 of 3 She gets to work. Why is she travelling in a labcoat? Maybe her boss will tell her off? She sits down at her computer. She's in heliophysics. She doesn't even work in a lab! When is someone going to mention the crazy lab coat? We gloss over the week, implying her dressing routine was normal.

SK @intemporaliter.bsky.social · 08/07/2026
1 of 3 Why does this happen in books? Beginning, getting an idea of the physical presence of the main character. Mentions that she's a scientist. Fine, makes sense she is thinking about work as she gets ready. She puts her labcoat on. What?! She's still at home! She's about to *drive* to work!

The darkness in book 2 is not overwhelming. There are notes of hope, and of overcoming the bad things in this world to bring about something better. Overall, more to my taste than not. 4/5 stars. First book blew me away though! Pretty hard to follow something that good!

Whilst I would recommend reading them in order, the main part of the immediate story stands alone, and the overarching plot would, I think, be followable even if you hadn't read the first. (That said, read the first in this series - it's brilliant.)

This is the second book in the series, and if you liked the first, you are likely to enjoy it. The tone feels a little darker as our PoV character is less naive. There is character development between the books (caused by experiences in the first).

As promised, review of the hugo shortlisted novels continues! A Drop of Corruption by Robert Jackson Bennett. A well fleshed-out world where science went in a very different direction to in our own. A murder mystery, though not of the more 'cosy' genre I often read. Read first book so I'd get it.
