There's simply no ethical way to support Harry Potter in 2025. It's not possible. $0.20 from every dollar you give JK Rowling goes directly to physically harming a trans person and that's not a joke or an exaggeration.

There are better fantasy books out there that don't fund harmful bullshit. Idc if it's a "comfort series." You can do better than reading a series about how an orphan becomes a cop while breaking all the rules and shit.

This is profoundly, the most disturbing story I've ever read. Elon Musk believes his children are a legion and he needs to make as many babies as possible before the apocalypse. He has a breeding fetish mixed with a messianic doomsday cult obsession. archive.ph/H7U2a
Screenshot of a Wall Street Journal article titled "The Tactics Elon Musk Uses to Manage His ‘Legion’ of Babies — and Their Mothers." The subheadline mentions that Musk juggles over a dozen children and "harem drama" while running his companies and advising Trump. It also notes he recently took a paternity test in a legal battle. The article is written by Dana Mattioli and dated April 15, 2025, 9:00 PM ET.

The key difference between this dumb giggling cruelty and e.g. JD Vance saying Wokeness has gone too far, or Wes Streeting saying we need to massacre a sacred cow every day til we’re up to our knees in blood, is that there is no difference. It is all the same shit at varying voltage and intensity.
Quickly! Run! Before you have to consider a contrary opinion that is now firmly in line with English law and mainstream public opinion! BACK TO THE COSY ECHO CHAMBER!!!!

What the hell happened to people in this country? When did we all become cowering idiots in the face of injustice & war? We are not our grandfather's descendants who bravely fought in the beaches, the air & in the streets. We should be ashamed but sadly we're not. The power & money is too strong.

*pinches my nose so hard it falls off*
screen shot of text from an online post: "Wow, so I'm currently working on a book project and a few months back I had a dialogue with ChatGPT about some concepts in the book. I used language that is quite specific to my project and unlikely to appear anywhere else, even in Google searches. One of the concepts is a neologism. Just for explanatory purposes, let's say it's something like "inter-unintelligibility." (Just an example, not the word I use.)

The undergraduate class I'm teaching is related to the topic of my book. Last week, students turned in short papers. And guess what? Two of twenty papers used this precise neologism in the title, even with the hyphens. It's not a phrase I've ever used in class, and does not appear in our readings, nor in Google searches ("no results found for ____".) Other very specific phrases from that short ChatGPT interaction I had also appear in their work."

So @mothersbasement.bsky.social made a really good point on Twitter that I feel should also be here: You wanna see a piece of art that clears every single AI bullshit "art" piece out there? Bam, here you go. (Quoted Geoff's tweet in the alt text, as he put it really perfectly.)
A panel of Mob Psycho 100 of Shinji and Ritsu watching Mob run in the Body Improvement Club.

"This is more beautiful than every single piece of AI slop ever generated put together and it’s not even close.

You don’t need to master draftsmanship to make great art. All you need is a sincere willingness to bare your soul, warts and all, to the best of your own ability."

Fascinating note by @amandamull.bsky.social in Bloomberg: throughout US history, going all the way back to colonial times, "Buy American" was manipulated by wealthy merchants and oligarchs to enrich themselves.

If Buy American campaigns don’t achieve their stated aims, then what’s their purpose? According to Frank, the most high-profile of these efforts have a couple of things in common: First, they tend to be spearheaded by corporate interests, even though they’re often also supported by lots of regular people. In the run-up to the American Revolution, many in the wealthy merchant class supported boycotts of imports at least in part because it gave them enormous leverage to sell subpar goods languishing in their inventories and demand high prices for smuggled foreign products. In 1933 the newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst astroturfed the Buy American movement to prominence, ordering his more than two dozen newspapers to feature it on their front pages every day for months. In the 1980s one of Buy American’s most ardent backers was Roger Milliken, a South Carolina-based textile magnate, infamous union-buster and future co-founder of the Heritage Foundation. He put millions of dollars into the campaign’s marketing effort as part of his Crafted With Pride organization, which did things like produce television ads about American jobs being lost to foreign workers, sponsor the Miss America pageant and prod Walmart into creating displays of American-made products in its stores.
