it's "curious" that NYT includes this photo with no context at all for the graffiti on the righthand side of the doorway (this is Cornell)

what i don't need right now is the pope slinging "ontological", how am i going to convince grad students it's generally iffy (adding alt text here)
screen shot of X posts:

Pope Leo XIV • @Pontif. In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others....

reply: Pope, would you please shut the fuck up about matters you do not understand? You're not an Ai influencer, no one elected you, and you have absolutely no weight in this debate and you're being used as a mouthpiece to sway public opinion. how many local models do you run?

it was daytime-warm outside all night last night
The last three major El Niño events, in 1997, 2015 and 2023, were accompanied by marked increases of surface temperature. Each of those years was the warmest on record at the time, and temperatures in subsequent years remained elevated. In fact, each of the following years (1998, 2016 and 2024) was even warmer than those previous record highs. (NYT)

this does not even make sense on its own terms:
Why Take the Flu Vaccine?
• Getting vaccinated is the best way to lower your risk of catching the flu and avoid dangerous health problems. The flu vaccine can also help prevent severe illness, ease symptoms, and reduce transmission to others.
• Flu and COVID-19 often can present similar respiratory symptoms; receiving a flu vaccine will help with an accurate and timely diagnosis if you become ill.
• Flu can cause significant disruptions in academics and the workplace. For example, students with influenza often miss 7-10 days of class. Preventing the flu can help prevent this loss of time and disruption.

Did You Know that wildlife rehab org's whose activities are underwritten by the oil industry routinely downplay the industry's role in boiling the planet? local marine mammal rescue org sent this yesterday:
What Is a Marine Heat Wave?
The ocean can experience heat waves much like those that occur on land. One important difference is that heat waves in the ocean can last much longer—sometimes for months or even years. We use the term “marine heat wave” to describe unusually warm ocean temperatures that persist over an extended period.

What Is an El Niño?
El Niño is the warm phase of a natural climate cycle called the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). During an El Niño, sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean become warmer than average.

What Does This Mean for Marine Mammals?
For marine mammals, these warming events can have devastating consequences. Warmer waters can disrupt the ocean food web, reduce nutrient-rich upwelling, increase harmful algal blooms like domoic acid events, shift prey availability, and force animals into new and often dangerous habitats.

this part really got me
we have a choice between remaining silent or engaging in debate. Because of the proximity of researchers with controversial ideas, we are compelled to address them in academic publications and other texts. As a result, we have less time for our own research, which is of a very high quality. We are forced to engage with research of questionable quality that has not previously been part of our core expertise and has already been thoroughly refuted by others.

This is the academic version of “flood the zone with shit” (Steve Bannon’s famous statement about the Trump campaign in 2016): spread controversial, unsubstantiated claims that others must respond to. That way, they have less time for the important, high-quality research they actually want to do.

taking my entire frustration at the world out on a scummy AI company:
I appreciate your taking the page down but I should never have had to make this request.

Having a profile in public (in this case, mandated and provided by my employer) does not mean “free for anyone to take for any reason”. You should make your entire site opt in; many, many professors won’t know they’ve been opted in without consent.

You have no right whatsoever to opt people in to your site, nor to imply that profiles on your site represent people being active on your site, as you are currently doing. You are committing theft and deceiving any student who thinks that professors have real presence. This is vile behavior; it is predatory towards naive students.
