🚨 Exciting results from the LATA trial at #AIDS2026! LATA showed that having injections every 8 weeks was better at keeping HIV under control than taking daily tablets for young people living with HIV. 🔗 Read more: www.innovative-ctu.ucl.ac.uk/news/news-st... aidsconference.bsky.social
Infographic with LATA results. It reads:
LATA tested long-acting injectable cabotegravir and rilpivirine (CAB/RPV), given once every eight weeks, compared to daily TLD (tenofovir disoproxil, lamivudine and dolutegravir) tablets.
476 young people living with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa
•	12-19 years old
•	Already on treatment for ≥ 1 year
•	HIV undetectable for ≥ 1 year
•	No previous treatment failure
•	Enrolled in Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe and South Africa
They were randomly allocated to one of these 2 groups:
Injections every 8 weeks
Daily tablets
Are long-acting injectables effective?
Proportion of young people with 2 consecutive viral loads ≥50 copies/mL by 96 weeks:
•	Injections: 1%
•	Daily tablets: 6%
Long-acting injectables were more effective than daily oral TLD tablets.
Are long-acting injectables safe?
•	No differences in safety between groups
•	Most people in the long-acting injectables group had mild injection-site reactions, usually pain, which quickly resolved.
What did young people think of long-acting injectables?
94% of people in the long-acting injectables group said it was a lot easier than taking daily medicines.
Conclusion: Long-acting injectable cabotegravir/rilpivirine are a highly effective and acceptable treatment option for young people living with HIV.

Today is #InternationalClinicalTrialsDay 🌍 Patients and the public are at the heart of our research. Our #PPI group helps shape our trials, making them better, more relevant, and more inclusive. Today we’re asking our patient reps: What are you #ProudestOf in your work as part of the PPI group?
A quote from Ben, it reads "I am proud of the work our PPI group has done in providing training and support to new PPI representatives and researchers, helping to maximise the impact of PPI in every study. The rapid and innovative response to the need for PPI in COVID research, by developing the concept of a PPI panel, is another great achievement that is now being applied in other disease areas, such as TB."A quote from Danielle, it reads "I am proudest of my involvement in promoting the use of the patient information sheet (PIS) developed by Dr Peter Knapp, ever since it was first presented at the INVOLVE conference. As a founder member of the Paediatric Oncology Reference Team (PORT), I made sure we adopted it for paediatric oncology trials. This made a significant difference for PORT, as we could make the PIS much more accessible. This is especially important with some children’s cancers, where Day 1 randomisation means families have very little time to get their head around things before making a decision for their child."A quote from Ian, it reads "I am proud of our contribution to the success of clinical trials through our provision of advice for the Quality Management Advisory Group. We know it has made a positive difference to the studies in the eyes of the project PPI leads, who feel the review of documents has been excellent. The comments we provide prompt interesting discussions within the trial teams, leading to improvements in PPI processes."A quote from Virginia, it reads "I’m proudest of the contribution we make to helping studies become easier for everyone to read and understand. Through PPI, we also encourage researchers to think about the real, practical realities of running a study and how best to involve participants. That’s where we really see the difference we make!"

It’s Wednesday, and we’re back with another #ProudestOf moment from the Unit! This week, we celebrate Jemima Thomson, Research Fellow and proud member of the ICTM Education team. We asked Jem what she’s #ProudestOf in her work at the Unit. Here’s what she shared 👇
A card with a quote from Jem. It reads “The thing I’m proudest of about the unit’s work is the dedication and hard work that goes into innovation and improving how clinical trials are conducted. Striving to make trial conduct more efficient benefits everyone, especially trial participants and patients who may benefit from treatments in the future. In my own work, I am most proud of my contribution to education. The students we teach are the trialists of the future. I think that having the opportunity to learn from specialists in the field is inspiring. I am always learning!”

It’s time for another #ProudestOf Wednesday! This week we’re celebrating Lou Brown, who’s been with the Unit for 14 years and will retire in May. We asked her what she’s #ProudestOf from her time working on innovative cancer trials. Thank you for everything, Lou — and happy retirement! 🎉
A card with a quote from Louise, it reads "Over my 14 years here, I’ve been lucky enough to work on some fantastic innovative trials such as FOCUS4 and the STAMPEDE 1 and 2 trials, but I think my proudest achievement is completing the PROMIS study, which transformed the diagnostic pathway for men with suspected prostate cancer. It was a challenging study, involving complex blinding arrangements for the diagnostic tests, but we pulled it off, and it became the primary source of evidence used by NICE to introduce MRI scans into the diagnostic pathway. This now spares many men unnecessary biopsies and treatments. I will be retiring in May, and I feel so grateful for the opportunity to work on such varied and innovative studies with so many fabulous people. Keep up the great work!"
