I like movies a lot. I worry about right-wing extremism. I play and sometimes write tabletop RPGs. I used to be an SRE but I got better. I grew up in New England and live with my wife in St. Paul (as of August 2026). He/his. innocence.com/~durrell

Happy #DayOfDredd! True story: my friend @cemurphy.bsky.social wrote me into Mega-City One so it’s a little bit my day too, I say.
Screenshot from a book. The text:

He mumbled, "M'name's Durrell," and rubbed his shoulder. "What the hell was that?”

"Aikido. What do you want, Durrell?"

His eyes shifted nervously. "Can we talk somewhere else?”

Most of this week's #LastFourWatched happened yesterday, and if that feels like a day full of societal critique, it was. I'm gonna turn off my brain and binge the OG RE movies this weekend. 📽️

Agnes continues to be one of the two best cats, and Jacques isn’t much of a lap kitty (although he’s affectionate) so Agnes gets to be in all the photos. 🐈‍⬛

For @cemurphy.bsky.social and any other Irish who’d be amused, my local coffee shop menu.
A nicely chalked coffee shop menu for Claddagh Coffee. There are the usual coffees, a weekend breakfast sandwich, and a range of signature lattes with goofy Irish names, from The Claddagh to O’Danny Boy to the Dropkick Murphy.

This is clickbait. The first ministers are meeting, yes, but it’s in their capacity as party leaders rather than as national leaders, and they’re affirming the right of their countries to seek independence, not declaring independence.
Bogus clickbait post from politicsuk.com:

“NEW: The leaders of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will meet tomorrow to sign a joint declaration for all three countries to gain independence from the UK”

Dear Paramount: maybe catch up on more recent developments in Harry Knowles’ life before using his blurbs?
Text from a product listing for an upcoming Blu-ray:

“From Academy Award winning director Peter Jackson comes the extraordinary story about one girl's life, and everything that came after. When 14-year-old Susie Salmon was murdered, she left her unfinished life behind. But now from her place in a strange but beautiful in-between world, she must help her father catch her killer and protect her family before she can finally move on. Filled with thrilling suspense, hope and the redeeming power of love, it's ‘One of the best films of the year. Incredibly powerful.’ - Harry Knowles, Ain't it Cool News”

The great thing about moving is you gotta look at all the stuff you keep meaning to do something with and long story short I just ordered a frame to fix this lovely ink sketch of my old Living Forgotten Realms PC, Reed. He’s a halfling dragon sorcerer.
An ink sketch of a halfling, holding a spear and charging into battle. He’s surrounded by an energy construct shaped like a dragon, roaring furiously. At the bottom hand lettered text says “Reed’s Dragon Charge”. It’s signed “Peter”.

I read Quantico next, skipping way ahead in his career, and the women are not sidelined which is cool. Now I’m on the sequel, Mariposa, and I can see I’m gonna be fascinated by Bear’s politics for a while.
Several paragraphs from Greg Bear’s Mariposa:

“The following internal warning from the Federal Reserve and the Department of the Treasury has never been released to the public and, god willing, never will be.

In order to qualify for all necessary further loans from IFPC, the United States executive branch, with the agreement of the Federal Reserve, the Secretary of the Treasury, and three congressional committees, has agreed to a special troubled nation loan protocol.

Certain national assets are valued and offered up as collateral. Central authority is ultimately invested in an automated system known as MSARC—Mutual Strategic Asset Recovery and Control—which can trigger massive reallocations and call in loans, effectively putting a debtor nation into instant receivership.

Should MSARC decide to act, collateral assets guaranteed under the loan agreements will immediately be transferred to IFPC.

Financial corporations and investment funds around the world can then call the political shots through a Reallocation Committee.

If MSARC so decides, for the first time in our history, foreigners will hold almost complete economic and political control of—and so they will own—the United States of America.

MSARC poses the greatest threat to this nation since the Cold War—maybe greater.

And it’s our own damned fault. We do hate paying taxes, and we do love all our precious government services. Squealing piggies at the trough.”

We took a walk down our new street today and I was pleased by this view.
A quiet semi-urban street with cars parked along it. To the immediate right there’s a wall covered with icy; to the left you can see first trees, then a white three story house, and off in the distance a cathedral.

Probably this isn’t my real answer but my 2026 answer is Matapanki, because you need a microbudget Chilean anti-fascist anti-colonialist punk superhero movie in your life.
Poster for Matapanki. The title of the movie is in big rough lettering across the top on a black background; the body of the poster is a black and white photo of an angry Chilean youth with a torn paper effect left to right covering his eyes. The inset left by the “tear” is red tinted showing the other characters in the movie.

Art deco splendor at Cafe Mimosa in downtown Missoula. Good coffee. Good food.
