Access to healthcare (especially for back pain) in rural and northern Ontario can be challenging. This helps make it a little easier. inlineonline.ca

Much of healthcare is built on the perspective that people are inherently weak and fragile, and need fixing. And I believe it’s a genuinely well intentioned perspective. Another perspective is that we are strong, resilient, and adaptable. And I believe that’s a better perspective.

Have back pain? I’m not AI. Let’s connect.
Image comparing AI to my services of online back pain assessments in a check box comparison.

AI checks off the first three boxes which include: almost infinite knowledge; faster, cheaper diagnosis; appointments at 2:00am.

But I get the last check box: able to get away with making a bad pun, or eye roll inducing joke and still be liked even more because of it.

Did you know…? The majority of back pain will get better on its own, and it doesn’t require seeing a specialist, getting imaging, or paying money for specific treatments. That’s it. That’s good news.

In-person care is great. But accessibility matters. That’s why online/virtual/telephone are great options for those facing mobility, health and distance challenges.

Do you have back pain, but are thinking that maybe you’d like to catch the flu or COVID on top of that? If so, do not look for further information on my back pain clinic which offers virtual and telephone consultations.

Popularized back in never, the advice to “go roll on a porcupine” as a treatment strategy for back pain should be avoided at all cost. Even if it’s covered by your extended health plan.

Here’s the thing… Even if COVID/infection control isn’t a worry for you, it is for others. The simple (and it is simple) act of donning a mask at a patient’s request shows care and compassion. Patients are already worried about their health. Why not ease this burden for them when they ask?

Mark Kubert, DC @inlineonline.bsky.social · 17/01/2026
Someone posted about prepping for a medical appointment they had, and the provider denied a request to wear an N95 mask for the patient’s safety because it’s “no longer a requirement.” That is plain old bad healthcare provider-ing. For a number of reasons.

You wouldn’t think that your patients feeling heard, and having enough time to ask their questions and understand the answers would be selling points. Yet here we are.

Why offer virtual care for back pain? Because sitting in a busy waiting room can be much riskier for people with health and autoimmune conditions. inlineonline.ca #Ontario #healthcare
A image of six silhouetted people sitting in close proximity in a waiting room. One person is wearing a mask. The other five people are maskless, and one of them is sneezing into their elbow with spray from the sneeze not being entirely contained, representing the challenges that people with health and autoimmune issues have in trying to access in-person care for their back pain.

Something I say with new patients before we start an initial assessment… “If there’s anything I say that you don’t agree with, or something you think I have wrong, please let me know. You won’t offend me, you won’t hurt my feelings. I want you to feel comfortable asking questions.”

You might have been expecting a different message? We’ve become so used to healthcare telling us what to worry about, and why you need to come in for [x] therapy. But messaging about how we can be strong, adaptable, and resilient are just as important. Especially when it comes to back pain.

We’re heading into health goal setting season. And if there’s one thing I wish you with your health endeavours, it’s peace. Peace in the plan. Peace in the struggle. Peace in your successes, and failures. Peace in knowing that effort and outcome can be two separate measures, both with worth.

Frequently people ask what’s the best therapy for back pain - physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage…? The answer is that it can vary significantly from person to person, for both the patient and the practitioner. My advice: the benefits you get need to be worth the time, effort, and cost.
