Still kicking, despite my schedule's best efforts. Even managed to break in some new markers!

Is it weird that writing alt text feels like doing an autopsy on my own work? It's so clinical. I almost didn't post this just because describing something I made in detail makes me so embarrassed I want to just shrivel up.

Maybe it's just a failure of imagination on my part. Or if I was a little more confident in my own work I could describe it with enough whimsy that it wouldn't feel odd. Only way to do that is to keep posting, I guess. More vulnerability, wheeee.

Remember when Crunchyroll tried to make their subtitles significantly worse a year ago? They backtracked on it at the time, but I suspected they were just delaying their plans to shift from Aegisub to OOONA, and sadly, it seems I was right: Crunchyroll is actively pushing OOONA subs to users now.

On top of that stability and maneuverability are basically inversely proportional, so you get to choose between making it handle like a suicidal hummingbird or a stubborn bathtub. So glad I don't do that shit anymore.

Designing payloads for commercial drones is a huge pain in the neck. The obvious hurdle is they have crap cargo capacity and every gram you add shortens flight time. But also everything has to be mounted externally, which changes the moments of inertia and changes the flight characteristics.

The MS designs are definitely an acquired taste. I do really like how the legs on most of them are visibly built around propellant tanks. Really sells that they're spacecraft first and foremost, which is a good flourish for a "Zeon wins" timeline.

That's one of the interesting contrasts between MechWarrior and the broader Battletech franchise. In the tabletop game and such mechs can kick, throw punches, dodge and weave, if both legs get blown off they can crawl. But MW has always been a little stripped down as a simulation, so out it goes.

An illustrated print of a blocky pink mech. Among other personalizations, one of its leg plates bears the words, "Heavy are the HIPS that wear the STRAP".

A pilebunker on the opposite arm is labelled, simply, "THE STRAP".

There's a wonky little mech shooter I played recently called Bounty Star that illustrates this beautifully. The controls are awkward, the weird double-ended heat scale where your mech can shut down from over *or* under heating takes so much managing, and overall there's just so much odd about it
