do not make fat jokes. yes, even if they're about the worst fat guy in the world who bullies other fat people. it only re-normalizea and entrenches popular use of those jokes against *all* fat people. it really is that simple. and it's really not that hard

Boruto/Kawaki is one of those ones where while I don't really see *either* of them as having fully embraced the 'brother' relationship even though they use the word and it's present (as defined as outside of them), they also really don't go together for me shipping-wise. 😔

I have a theory that we were probably supposed to learn some of the Uchiha stuff through at least Kiba because he's the only one of the Konoha 11 who explicitly has an older sibling, and Hana is the same age as Itachi.

Kishimoto is actually pretty solid with sorting out character arcs and giving characters stuff to develop them, but because of the popularity polls, that made a lot of that go out the window. We don't get arcs for Kiba and Shino at all (or Tenten) and instead more Sasuke and Deidara.

Unironically some of the problem there is we got too *much* of Sasuke, the popularity polls demanded more of him.

My tea has been returned.
A zodiac "Cancer" themed tea tin with a woman on it. She has a shell hat, the cancer sign tattoo and is holding a large crustacean under her arm like you do a small dog.

A big problem is he is reluctant to press charges against his daughter's girlfriend even though she needs to be gone.

JulyFlame @injulyflame.bsky.social · 10h
They've tried. The girlfriend is evil and vile. Outside security cameras were destroyed, she's broken doors and windows to get back in the house, comes in through the dog door, my mom had to get their bedroom door a key lock and even that didn't stop her.

It's extra bad because this was something I got myself for spending my birthday alone at grad school. I was expecting her to maybe pilfer some of the groceries from yesterday (since this is her dad's house) but not my fucking tea which obviously doesn't belong here.

I'm explicitly housesitting because of her and her girlfriend (the girlfriend regularly steals my mom's stuff to sell for drug money). I just really wasn't expecting my tea to be nabbed, especially this early/before they've even properly left.

SHE STOLE MY TEA. A whole tin, even!!! This isn't my photo but this is what she nabbed. I can't get the tin anymore!

I am housesitting. My mother and her husband left about three hours ago. His daughter shows up, is shocked that I am here. Awkward introduction. She leaves as I get in the shower. I go downstairs. My tea is missing. She stole my tea. They haven't even boarded their flight yet!

I looked it up to double check assuming it was due to immune system stuff. The tl;dr is not just the covid vaccine but basically any vaccine, because the immunological response to them makes the lymph nodes swell up which is one of the things they're checking for.

Honestly my thought there with the announcement is that whatever Ikemoto's got planned and cooked up got Kishimoto *inspired* and wanting to do more. The setup for Boruto was initially a handoff, but tbh to me it's always been kinda obvious Kishimoto left himself room to go back to the setting.

JulyFlame @injulyflame.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
But once Ikemoto takes over the power scaling stuff gets negated, is the best way of putting it. It's very interesting because it turns everything into multiple issues where raw power is *not* the answer or solution.

The Sarada story reads to me as Kishimoto setting things up for the handover's desired status quo rather than what he really wanted for the characters.

JulyFlame @injulyflame.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
Without getting too into spoilers, to me it felt like Kodachi was the one wanting/pushing a lot of the deity level stuff and the things that set up into Boruto; the epilogue really didn't suggest Sasuke basically being in self-exile to that degree to me.

The only thing I would say is that the anime some weird narrative artifacts that are pretty much all audience-directed for kids who didn't watch Naruto themselves and to compress some stuff, but it really isn't that bad a watch.
110
JulyFlame @injulyflame.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
The manga end and plot can absolutely be a little rough especially during Kodachi's tenure, but it becomes a lot more interesting after when it's fully Ikemoto writing with Kishimoto's feedback, second part more so.

JulyFlame @injulyflame.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
For most of the anime-only stuff (which is supposed to also be canon for the manga), it's a lot of fun, there are only a couple arcs that I found ridiculous, way fewer issues than I personally had with Shippuden filler overall. I have a lot of dislike towards SP's Naruto filler but Boruto is better.

JulyFlame @injulyflame.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
Depending on what aspects you cared about with Naruto, the anime gets a lot of unfair flack towards it and the intense powerscaling issue gets handled after the original writer left (most likely dismissed for trying to trying to murder off Naruto and Sasuke without permission based on the timing).

...This last bit just accidentally gave myself a horrible flashback to remembering the really stupid arguments that were happening in the mid-00s because of Bleach and Death Note and people accusing Death Note of ripping off Bleach because of having shinigami.

JulyFlame @injulyflame.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
But overall at the end of all this my god I really need people to understand that drawing from history, mythology & folktales is a common and it is not people ripping each other off and it makes you look foolish to confidently make statements like that because you never looked into things further.

JulyFlame @injulyflame.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
Which is basically that enough people don't want more of the mangaka's work in general, they just want more of that mangaka working in that specific setting or even genre. Reject anything else. Mangaka with smaller series don't suffer the same way and don't get permanently locked in.
110
JulyFlame @injulyflame.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
Samurai 8 is a whole other situation, but I think a good bit of why it failed basicially comes down to the changing manga environment and evolution of megaseries (like Naruto, oops) especially in WSJ's ecology. Even Toriyama basically got permanently tethered to Dragonball after it exploded.
110
JulyFlame @injulyflame.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
Kishimoto being a supervisor means he's doing *some* clearer oversight now, but he pretty obviously respects and trusts Ikemoto with his characters and setting. It isn't absurd for Kishimoto to regain his creative energy and want to go into more Naruto stuff, especially after Samurai 8 failed.
110
JulyFlame @injulyflame.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
And for Kishimoto returning to what is his creative baby... him not taking over Boruto isn't a sign of Boruto failing; imo Kodachi's sudden departure was to me pretty clearly because of him crossing creative boundaries that Kishimoto didn't want to have happen (trying to kill off Naruto and Sasuke).

JulyFlame @injulyflame.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
Studio Pierrot animates quite similarly across its different titles & there's very much a specific in-house style that's especially noticeable on filler episodes where it's fully SP. There were pretty incongrous anime-only characters in Bleach & Naruto when both were running at the same time!
110
JulyFlame @injulyflame.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
One of the funnier accusations I saw was that Naruto was clearly more plagiarized than someone thought because its animation style was copied from Ninku. Ninku wasn't just a WSJ title (thus the inspiration motifs Kishimoto has stated) but was animated by Studio Pierrot before Naruto.

JulyFlame @injulyflame.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
Celestial beings/deities to aliens is an obvious move to make as an aside on its own, but it being such a thing in shonen manga is very much because of Dragonball Z.
110
JulyFlame @injulyflame.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
You cannot escape that formula in WSJ titles. It is not an accident that Boruto evolved from Naruto's mythological/folktale base into having aliens or that JJK's sequel has aliens; this is entirelyt because of Dragonball evolving from a JttW pastiche into having aliens.
110
JulyFlame @injulyflame.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
Naruto is a Weekly Shonen Jump property, animated by Studio Pierrot. WSJ loves having its manga refer to each other or have inspiration drawn from each other. THEE shonen formula people are so familiar with is because of WSJ editors making the bigger titles heavily emulate Toriyama and Dragonball.

JulyFlame @injulyflame.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
It shows so much cluelessness in general of how creative energy works, how inspiration and references work especially when something is made for the same publisher/subset, how creative projects evolve when more than one person works on them, and some cluelessness on Japanese mythology + folktales.

JulyFlame @injulyflame.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
While catching up on the NYCC Naruto announcement stuff, it's direly funny that there different groups trying to bash on everything in general: the anti-Boruto folks trying to the new series as proof Boruto is failing & anti-Naruto folks trying to use Ninku as proof Kishimoto is a plagiarist hack.

My mother got married to her fiancé yesterday and between that and the rehearsal dinner. I am so happy for both of them but also I am so tired and achey and unfortunately for me I need to get my apartment sufficiently straightened away today to go housesit for them for a week. 😩

There's also a huge streaming-in of a lot of weird supremacist cultural classism and casteism that's helping make some really uniquely horrific multicultural toxicity.
020
JulyFlame @injulyflame.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Yeah. I have criticisms, especially for the Kodachi era, but a lot of those have been addressed in one way or another since Ikemoto became the primary creative and Kishimoto became more involved. I think people are just deeply into bashing for the sake of bashing at this point.
020
JulyFlame @injulyflame.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Yeah, all the casual bashing is just really annoying, especially at this point with the handover having happened and it being pretty clear that Kishimoto *is* on board with and trusts Ikemoto.

Honestly, this take is so bad because it's basically making the assumption that there are no good kidlit series at all. Just fundamentally incorrect.
