So the quote is almost too perfect for this. Science has always been cumulative, but people have also been arguing about who deserves credit for almost as long.

Hooke had accused Newton of borrowing from his work on optics, and Newton’s reply is basically: sure, I build on other people’s work, but on the work of giants. Some historians even think "giants" was a dig at Hooke himself, who was famously short...

Yes, completely agree. The cumulative nature of science only really works if we can see the chain of contribution, i.e. the audit trail. And there’s a funny bit of historical irony in using that Newton quote here: he may well have been mocking Robert Hooke when he wrote it.

Conversely, if Europe keeps Ukraine financed, armed and defended through 2027, then each new Russian offensive consumes manpower and equipment without changing the political trajectory. The real contest is going to be over trajectory expectations, not territory.

Iñigo Alonso Fernández @inigoalonso.com · 05/09/2026
The aim would be not necessarily to defeat Ukraine’s army, but to alter expectations. Russia could fail operationally yet still benefit if the offensive fractures Western cohesion or strengthens the argument that continued support only delays the inevitable.

Iñigo Alonso Fernández @inigoalonso.com · 05/09/2026
An offensive launched from weakness can still have strategic value even if it performs badly militarily. I.e., limited gains, heavy infrastructure strikes and visible mobilisation can create the impression that time favours Russia.

Iñigo Alonso Fernández @inigoalonso.com · 05/09/2026
I think the key question is indeed not whether Russia can launch a successful offensive, but what “success” would mean.

That was me. And funnily enough, the movie DVD I bought in the US and brought back to Europe was Hackers (1995). Rude awakening indeed.

I agree it would be too painful for them to go all the way and they will continue with these shenanigans anyway. I think the US would also have economic trouble if they attempt anything stupid. The risk is quite high in both places, but can definitely disagree on the likelihood versus impact ratios.

Ceuta and Melilla have more than three times the population of Greenland, surely that should affect the "seriousness" of the threat somehow? And the US has way more underdeveloped space than Morocco...

After the midterms, probably early 2027, as the complete lame duck phase starts. He can have time to organize before the primaries while distancing himself from the craziness, and yet he is there long enough to ensure the pile of shit he aims to inherit is not at its worse.

He continues to let them do that. The issue is that the path for achieving that is legally really hard, i.e., basically rewriting the Spanish constitution.

This is only a concern if you consider your own population an adversary that needs to be kept in the dark. Your real adversaries do this just as easily, they just don't publish it.

The most important thing is doing a lot of it while getting feedback as you go along. I'm sure people that have mastered that ability can be hired to facilitate the process. Anecdotally I have heard that multimodal slop machines are also good at providing artistic feedback. YMMV

Ukraine would be happy to sell them cheap gas. Or even allow Russian gas to be transported over Ukraine pipelines (with a fee). They just need Hungary to stop funding Russia while they are at war. A quite reasonable ask. If Hungary prefers funding Russia, then of course they are enemies.

✅ Use risk assessment tools early: catching indirect interactions early reduces nasty surprises later. ⚠️ But don’t overdo it: we found that low-intensity, long-term use is more effective than short bursts of intense analysis. #ResearchInsights

In complex, high-stakes systems, this is how we contain the entropy. This is how we move forward without delusion. This is what Systems Engineering is for.

Iñigo Alonso Fernández @inigoalonso.com · 26/05/2025
It’s a form of humility: We admit we don’t know everything at the start. But we commit to making good decisions anyway; by design, not by accident.

Iñigo Alonso Fernández @inigoalonso.com · 26/05/2025
A mature SE process treats requirements as living constructs. Not contracts to lock down, but frameworks to evolve as reality unfolds.
100
Iñigo Alonso Fernández @inigoalonso.com · 26/05/2025
At ESS, requirements for neutron flux, shielding, or control latency shouldn’t be fixed specs. They should be negotiations, between physics, engineering, safety, and cost. SE helps keep that negotiation disciplined and productive.

Iñigo Alonso Fernández @inigoalonso.com · 26/05/2025
This process includes: Translating vague goals into testable behaviors Resolving requirement conflicts across domains Establishing traceability to anchor decisions Managing inevitable change with rigor
100
Iñigo Alonso Fernández @inigoalonso.com · 26/05/2025
Systems Engineering doesn’t solve this with a perfect list of specs. Instead, it gives us a process for converging on clarity over time.
100
Iñigo Alonso Fernández @inigoalonso.com · 26/05/2025
Stakeholders don’t always know what they want. Engineers don’t yet know what’s possible. And projects are boxed in by budget, compliance, and deadlines from day one.
100
Iñigo Alonso Fernández @inigoalonso.com · 26/05/2025
In complex systems (think particle accelerators, automotive platforms, control systems) early requirements are rarely complete or stable. They’re often ambiguous, conflicting, or just… aspirational.
100
Iñigo Alonso Fernández @inigoalonso.com · 26/05/2025
One of the most persistent myths in engineering is this: "If we just define the requirements well enough up front, everything else will fall into place." Tempting idea. Also, deeply wrong.
100
Iñigo Alonso Fernández @inigoalonso.com · 24/05/2025
So no, Systems Engineering doesn’t find “the best solution.” It finds the right compromise. And in complex systems, that’s not settling; that’s mastery. #SystemsEngineering #EngineeringLeadership #ProjectManagement #ProductDevelopment
