I used them in college, 1984-88. There was an urban legend of a student who took too long to finish their exam, so the prof refused to accept it. Student, huffily: “Don’t you know who I am?” Prof: “no, and I don’t care.” Student: “Good!” (Shoves blue book in the middle of the pile, scurries out)

I’m an HIV specialist too, in practice since 1999. I have absolutely witnessed firsthand the suffering and death caused by HIV denialism. It still makes me incandescently angry.

One of my favorite genres is a little slice of life that’s all vibes but very little actually happens. So I’d show them Stranger than Paradise, The Apartment, Echo Park, After Hours, Smithereens, or Bagdad Cafe.

Risky Business My friends and I in high school thought it was celebrating rebellion against parental and societal pressure to get into college. But now it just looks like a celebration of Reaganomics and utter dehumanization of sex workers.

Same! I didn’t have regular access to a VCR or premium cable until college (yes, I am Early Gen X Old). So my rewatches were the yearly broadcast of Wizard of Oz and Willy Wonka (I think Oz was on Thanksgiving), or standing in line to see Star Wars (A New Hope) or Grease for the 7th or 8th time.

I remember wanting to watch Sesame Street but all the grownups were watching Watergate, which seemed to me like an incredibly boring TV show. Just men in suits sitting at tables, talking into microphones. No muppets anywhere.
