Finally, I consider the implications of the dominant understanding of decolonization for universities and beyond. This allows me to show that the dominant - Mignolo-type - understanding of decolonization hinders a structural critique of capitalism, neoliberalism, imperialism.

However, the original MCD tradition is nonetheless limited by its departure from the critique of PE. As such, similar to Cardoso, I don't put all the blame on the consumers of decolonial theory, as if returning tothe original debates will solve all problems.

I argue that their work allows for more critical understandings of knowledge, decolonization & capitalism than the dominant decolonial strand by exploring their work on colonialism, universality, modernity. Their work can actually be read as a critique of Mignolo-type arguments!

Ingrid Harvold Kvangraven @ingridhk.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
Some of the work of the MCD group - the work that engaged with Marxist political economy rather than rejecting it outright - has been called ‘the critical dimension of decolonial theory’. Scholars in this group include Quijano, Dussel, Grosfoguel, Coronil.

Ingrid Harvold Kvangraven @ingridhk.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
A radical decolonization agenda situates theorization within the global capitalist order & builds a critique of and challenge to power. Extending previous work (see pic), I argue that for such an agenda to be radical, it should be founded on the critique of political economy.
110
Ingrid Harvold Kvangraven @ingridhk.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
Beyond demonstrating how the Mignolo strand is in line with inverted Eurocentrism, promotes nativist politics and rejects all thinking associated with Europeans (including Marxism), I also evaluate to what extent the MCD tradition is in line with a radical decolonization agenda.

Ingrid Harvold Kvangraven @ingridhk.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
The original debate about dependency theory became distorted to fit the worldview of a Global North audience, rendering dependency theory ‘a strawman easy to destroy’. Similarly, the debates about decolonization have been shoehorned into the frameworks of Global North academia.
110
Ingrid Harvold Kvangraven @ingridhk.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
This is not the first time Global North and elite audiences misinterpret, flatten and distort schools of thought that primarily emerged in the Global South. Cardoso famously outlined these problems in the article ‘The Consumption of Dependency Theory in the United States’ (1977).
110
Ingrid Harvold Kvangraven @ingridhk.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
I interrogate both the dominant strand of decolonial theory in the global North and elite spaces in the global South - the one associated with Mignolo - and the original Modernity-Coloniality-Decoloniality (MCD) debates in Latin America that it claims as its origin.

While Samir Amin is a well known critic of Eurocentrism, his work on ‘inverted Eurocentrism’ is less well known. He argues that inversion entails a romanticization of specific identities or social formations in the Global South and that it tends to accompany Eurocentric ideology.
110
Ingrid Harvold Kvangraven @ingridhk.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
Why has Eurocentrism and decolonization come to be associated with identity and location rather than with capitalism, displacing more radical decolonization efforts? I argue that it's linked to what Samir Amin calls 'inverted Eurocentrism'. New article👇 t.co/7ussMKb3KM

It might seem that economics is an objective, scientific study of markets and rational human behaviour, separate from politics. But mainstream models obscure the structural power dynamics at the core of global inequality.

The only amusing thing about Summers/Epstein is this journalist referring to Summers as a "leftwing academic". LOL. Also, how did it take so many so long to peg Summers as a wrong'un? Already in 1991 he was trumpeting the economic logic of "dumping a load of toxic waste in the lowest wage country".
