Except that when I think about all the weird creative rpgs that are being made by queer people right now I immediately become overwhelmed because there are far too many out there to play in one lifetime.

Anyway what I should be doing is buying the work of people who are doing weird original shit now instead of fixating on how the stuff that I was into when I was 15 got successful and turned boring.

Look at what they did to my boy.

Zagor in the 2017 edition of The Warlock of Firetop Mountain. The art style is blocks of shading.

You can still get plenty of stuff in the indie market that has that weird energy, which is one of the reasons I try to buy things from smaller makers.

I'm probably making it sound like I'm one of those people who hates everything new and I promise that's not it. There's a weird and uncanny quality to a lot of pre-2000s fantasy art that I think helped transport the viewer into the world's depicted.

I bought the first 3 Fighting Fantasy game books for my nephew in the new editions and they arrived this morning and the illustrations have had a contemporary makeover and I was so upset that I went and spent $100 on ebay for 1983 editions of The Warlock of Firetop Mountain and Citadel of Chaos.

The massage was simple in 1987. 40k felt like Rik Mayall in the young ones shouting "FASCIST". It didn't need an in-depth analysis, we knew a Fascist when we saw the jackboots.

But the message people get now is that because of the dangers of the galaxy, the Imperium's Fascism is necessary. I think this weakens the theme and makes an opening for dudes who want to prove that Fascism is correct.

There's a claim in the first piece that the common wisdom is that the Imperium are the bad guys and I don't think that's quite true. The common wisdom I always hear is "there are no good guys in 40k". I think this came from 4 decades of media that's aimed to show up the corruption in every faction.

I think it's also worth noting that since very early days, 40k has been aimed at children, who we don't expect to have the media literacy to understand satire of Fascism (I was 11 when I got into it and I thought space marines were so cool).

Good discussion in the comments about how being across a table from someone can prevent a politics that abstracts people into things, but also that many people getting into 40k are getting there via books or video games now.

I'm generally on board with this but I think the thing it's warning against, the sanding down of the edges of the satire, has already happened, as GW has made more of a push to make space marines appealing.
