I live on one of those -- an L-shaped one-way street that's used as a shortcut between two major arteries. The city finally put speed humps in the middle of every block because commuters were tearing down a residential street at double the speed limit every morning and nothing else was working.

We bulldozed through the East Side of Buffalo to put in a commuter highway so that it would be easier to live in the suburbs. Removing that highway would strengthen city neighborhoods. What do we do?

This is a great thread and it centers around an urban planning decision that we rarely explicitly acknowledge: "How important is it to make a town/village/city convenient for the people who don't actually live there? Should they be prioritized over the actual residents?"

Not unless we bomb the rest of the world's manufacturing base into rubble, like we did last time. The unionized factory worker earning middle-class wages in the 1950s and 1960s was a historical aberration from a confluence of factors that will never happen again, but Boomers think it was normal.

The school itself hasn't changed -- mostly four year degrees and a couple of Master's programs. But the state of New York relaxed the requirements on who can call themselves a University, so a lot of schools changed their names. Canisius, D'Youville, Daemen, and Buff State locally.
