There may not be pasties at the gigs themselves, but if you want me to stop by Teddywedger's downtown I will pick you up one and hand it to you at the gig.

I laughed SO HARD. [I dated a violist once. My opinion of them has since mostly recovered, I SWEAR, but the rites of spring bit had me in stitches]

Come see us tomorrow. Go see the Countrymen on Saturday. You will feel the welcome and camaraderie, from us and from them. They crossed the ocean for this.

Amy McNally @infamousfiddler.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Do you know what they did? They stayed till the end of our gig, they sat around the fire with us, they pulled out guitars and their voices -- and in that way, they showed us that when we get together to make music, all of our voices are important, and all of our voices can be joyful.

The Countrymen, and some of the folks who settled Mineral Point, they are. That's why we're playing Cornish fest! They're the real deal, and they don't point and laugh or criticize at those of us who are celebrating something that's further away from us, in time, genes, or musical traditions.

We play Trelawney and we sing some songs from all over the UK. But we're not from Cornwall.

Amy McNally @infamousfiddler.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
It's not just that they came to our gig at Pendarvis and sang during some of the breaks, no. It's the way they welcome us. See, I play in The Tooles. We're an Irish band. We get invited to play the Pendarvis Pub night, and we love it, and we're a great pub band!

It's not just because they like my band The Tooles, and in fact asked permission to sing one of Kurt's original sea chanties at an international festival, but BOY DID THEY DO GREAT AT THAT TOO.

If you are wondering, for some reason, why it is I am so fucking excited to see 5 strapping singers from Cornwall come over here to little ol' Wisconsin, it's not just because they can sing. And BOY CAN THEY SING: www.thecountrymen.co.uk/music/cornis...

Anti-violin language: “Well, fiddle-dee-dee!” Why: this expression can be equivalent to an ironic “well la-dee-dah!” as though the fiddle were not a truly important part of history, music, and conviviality. New Phrase: “Well, viola-la-la!” (Violists, I’m kidding, please don’t kill me.)

Amy McNally @infamousfiddler.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Anti-violin language: “Fiddling while Rome burns” Why: it connotes merriment during tragedy. Modern fiddles did not exist at that time. Playing fiddle is always a good choice, no matter the circumstances. New Phrase: “I wish I could play the fiddle, so I could do something meaningful right now.”

Amy McNally @infamousfiddler.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Anti-violin language: “don’t fiddle with it”/“fiddling around” Why: this implies messing about/doing nothing. The violin/fiddle is an instrument of constant tension and adjustment, made specifically for playing music. New Phrase: “Don’t muck about! Take up an instrument and participate!”

Amy McNally @infamousfiddler.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Anti-violin language: “playing the world’s smallest violin” Why: this expression denotes false pity. The violin is a beautiful instrument full of sympathy and empathy for all. New Phrase: “That’s too bad for you. Would you like to listen to some Stravinsky? It always cheers me up.”

and the reason that it's very important that I tell you about the gig of a band I'm not in on Saturday is because these boys are coming all the way from Cornwall, and their vocal harmonies are like a brick wall made of light. Go! Listen! They're amazing.

SILVER AND LEAD, the nineteenth full-length October Daye adventure, releases in paperback tomorrow. This was my first Toby book with Tor; I was very fortunate both to find a new home for such a long-running series, and to be able to retain my cover artist.

I was going to do some of them through Songfile/HFA, but in light of recent losses, I decided to cut the middleman so I could tell those people their songs mattered to me enough to want to try to play them. So I could give those people their money directly and soon.

I'm going to talk about some NSFW ideas and I'm going to break a couple of dreams here: You don't want "a threesome." That's like saying "I want to play a vivaldi concerto once." You only get there with practice. You want at minimum three threesomes so you can be better at them. Aim higher.

TONIGHT, Madison, WI: Jack o'the Dust at Bierock from 8-10pm! Bierock is in the same strip mall as the Willy Street Co-op's North location, across from Warner Park. The food is incredible, the taps are extensive and not only limited to beer, and the desserts are perfect.
