Short RNA chaperones promote aggregation-resistant TDP-43 conformers to mitigate neurodegeneration
Aberrant aggregation of the prion-like RNA binding protein TDP-43 drives several fatal neurodegenerative proteinopathies, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In this work, we define how sho...

This is a really important paper in an area that is hard to study. I would recommend any student read this preprint to see how confounding issues arise even in clever assays. Internal Ribosome Entry Sites (IRES) are very interesting because they bypass normal translation initiation mechanisms. 1/

eVGeMdb: a manually curated database for experimentally validated genetic modifiers of neurodegenerative disorders
Abstract. Genetic modifiers are genes that, while not directly causing disease, can alter the onset, progression, severity, or specific phenotypes of a dis

1/10 Genome maintenance by telomerase is a fundamental process in nearly all eukaryotes. But where does it come from? Today, we report the discovery of telomerase homologs in a family of antiviral RTs, revealing an unexpected evolutionary origin in bacteria. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Antiviral reverse transcriptases reveal the evolutionary origin of telomerase
Defense-associated reverse transcriptases (DRTs) employ diverse and distinctive mechanisms of cDNA synthesis to protect bacteria against viral infection. However, much of DRT family diversity remains ...

Ever wonder how intronic repeats in C9orf72 get translated into toxic proteins in ALS and FTD? We found that transcription initiates within the intron to generate a novel endogenous efficient mRNA template for RAN translation in patient neurons and mouse models 1/5| PNAS www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

It is important at this pivotal moment to @standupforscience.bsky.social. Looking forward to sharing my thoughts on why this should be a national priority at tomorrow’s rally in SF:
